How to choose a Hindi tutor

Most people pick on price and regret it. The three things that actually decide whether you keep going are whether the tutor makes you speak in the first lesson, whether they correct your pronunciation instead of letting it settle, and whether the time slot works every week rather than just this week.

Ask for a trial before you commit

Every tutor here offers one. In it, notice how much of the hour you spoke. A lesson where the teacher explained grammar for fifty minutes was a lecture, and you can get a lecture free on YouTube. What you are paying for is somebody listening to you and correcting what they hear.

Native speaker or qualified teacher?

Both, if you can. A native speaker gives you the rhythm and the everyday phrasing no textbook contains. A trained teacher gives you an order to learn things in. The tutors on this page are native Hindi speakers, and several have formal teaching qualifications — their profiles say which.

What a lesson costs, honestly

Online Hindi tutors range from about $3 to $25 an hour. Tutors based in India typically charge at the lower end; tutors in the US, UK or Europe charge more for the same lesson. The gap is cost of living, not teaching quality. One lesson a week plus free study between them works for almost everyone and costs less than a coffee habit.

Timezones

Every tutor here teaches from India, and the schedule on each profile converts to your local time automatically — you never have to do the arithmetic. Evening slots in India are morning in the US and afternoon in Europe, so most timezones have a comfortable overlap.

Common questions

Do I need to know any Hindi to start?

No. Every tutor here teaches complete beginners regularly, starting from the Devanagari alphabet and the first few greetings. Saying "I know nothing" is a normal way to begin.

How long until I can hold a conversation?

Around four to six months of consistent study for simple everyday conversation, and one to two years for comfortable fluency. The Foreign Service Institute puts Hindi at roughly 1,100 hours to professional working proficiency — that is full time, so treat it as the ceiling rather than the target.

Can my child learn here?

Yes. Several tutors teach children specifically and pitch the lesson to the age in front of them — a six-year-old learning their first letters needs a very different hour from a teenager preparing for an exam.

What happens after I send a request?

The tutor gets your message with the time you picked and replies directly to arrange the first lesson. There is no payment on this site and no account to create.

Can I learn Hindi without learning the script?

You can, and it is a false economy. Devanagari takes about two weeks and everything after month two is slower without it, because romanised Hindi is inconsistent and hides sounds English does not have. Our free alphabet guide covers it.
