What are the colours in Hindi?

लाल laal (red), नीला neela (blue), हरा hara (green), पीला peela (yellow), काला kaala (black), सफ़ेद safed (white), नारंगी naarangi (orange), गुलाबी gulaabi (pink), भूरा bhoora (brown), बैंगनी baingani (purple). Most colours ending in -आ change with gender: लाल stays लाल, but हरा becomes हरी for a feminine noun.

The gender rule, in one line

Colours ending in -आ change: हरा (hara) → हरी (hari) → हरे (hare). Colours ending in anything else — लाल, सफ़ेद, नारंगी, गुलाबी — never change at all.

So: हरा आम (green mango, masculine) but हरी मिर्च (green chilli, feminine). Same colour, different ending, because the noun decided.

Colours named after things

Hindi is lovely about this and it makes them easy to remember:

Once you know the noun, the colour is free.

Light and dark

हल्का (halka) for light, गहरा (gehra) for dark, placed before: हल्का नीला, light blue. Both follow the same -आ gender rule.

Asking

"यह किस रंग का है?" (yeh kis rang ka hai?) — what colour is this? रंग (rang) is the word for colour, and it is the same रंग in Holi, the festival of colours.
