What is the best way to learn Hindi as a complete beginner?

Learn Devanagari first — four to eight weeks at twenty minutes a day — then start speaking badly immediately rather than waiting until you feel ready. The two things that most reliably separate people who learn Hindi from people who quit are starting the script early and being corrected by someone who knows what to listen for.

There is no shortcut, but there is an order that works better than the order most people choose.

Weeks 1 to 8: the script, twenty minutes a day

Do not postpone this. Romanised Hindi has no agreed spelling — the same word appears as nahin, nahi, nahee and nhi — so learning through romanisation means learning every word twice.

Learn the consonants as the five-row grid, not as a list. The rows are organised by where in the mouth the sound is made, so the grid teaches pronunciation at the same time as the shapes. Five rows of five is much less to memorise than 46 separate characters.

From week 1, in parallel: speak badly

The biggest single predictor of whether someone reaches conversation is how early they start producing language. Not consuming — producing.

Say wrong things out loud from the first week. Learners who wait until they feel ready take roughly twice as long, and many never start at all.

What to learn first, in order

1. होना — the verb "to be". Everything leans on it. 2. आप, तुम, मैं — and when to use each. 3. Numbers 1 to 20, then 20 to 100. 4. The postpositions का, को, से, में. 5. Twenty verbs in the polite -iye form.

That is roughly three months of material and it covers most everyday situations.

The three things self-study cannot do

Correct your pronunciation. You cannot hear the difference between त and ट at first. An app will not tell you, and an uncorrected error becomes permanent in about six weeks.

Correct your gender agreement. Hindi verbs change with the speaker's gender, and getting it wrong sounds jarring to a native speaker in a way you will never notice yourself.

Make you speak. An app lets you feel productive while never producing a sentence under pressure.

A realistic weekly plan

Three hours a week gets most people to simple conversation in six to nine months.

What to avoid

Learning both Hindi and Urdu scripts at once. Pick one.

Grammar-first study. ने will defeat you in month two if you meet it before you can hold a conversation. Leave it.

Waiting to feel ready. Nobody feels ready. That is not a stage that arrives.
