Day 11 — I don't understand

The idea

The single most useful sentence for a learner, and the one that keeps a conversation in Hindi instead of collapsing into English. Say it in Hindi rather than in English and the other person will slow down rather than switch.

Today's task

Do this, not just read it

Memorise all four of today's phrases to the point of not thinking. You will use them daily for a year.

Words for today

Please speak slowlyज़रा धीरे बोलिएzara dheere boliye
Say it again, pleaseफिर से कहिएphir se kahiye

The mistake to avoid

Watch for this

Apologising in English. The moment you say 'sorry, I don't...' the conversation is over and in English.

Where this sits in the thirty days

This is day 4 of 7 in the first sentences phase (days 8–14), whose job is saying true things about yourself without assembling them word by word. It assumes you have done day 10. It sits in the middle of the phase, which is where most of the actual learning happens and where most people quietly stop. Day 12 continues from here.

How long today should take

About 23 to 33 minutes if you do the task properly rather than reading past it. Missing a day is not a reason to stop — the sequence matters, the calendar does not.

A note on the Hindi spellings

Devanagari is easy to get slightly wrong when it is typed by hand — a missing matra, the wrong nukta. If something here looks off to you, trust a native speaker over this page and please tell us so it gets fixed — it takes a moment and a real person reads it. Romanised spellings are a guide to the sound, not a standard: there is no single official way to write Hindi in Latin letters.

Practise today's task with a person

Today's task is a speaking task. Doing it alone is better than not doing it, and doing it with someone who corrects you is worth about five times as much.
