Day 18 — The present tense, and your own gender

The idea

मैं बोलता हूँ if you are a man; मैं बोलती हूँ if you are a woman. Your own gender is in your verb, in every sentence you speak, for the rest of your life in this language. Get the right one automatic now.

Today's task

Do this, not just read it

Say ten sentences about what you do daily, all in the correct form for you.

Words for today

EnglishHindiSounds like
to speakबोलनाbolna
to eatखानाkhaana
to drinkपीनाpeena
to seeदेखनाdekhna

The mistake to avoid

Watch for this

Learning only the masculine form because the textbook prints it. Half of learners then say every sentence wrong.

Where this sits in the thirty days

This is day 4 of 8 in the grammar that carries weight phase (days 15–22), whose job is gender, postpositions and the present tense working together. It assumes you have done day 17. It sits in the middle of the phase, which is where most of the actual learning happens and where most people quietly stop. Day 19 continues from here.

How long today should take

About 23 to 33 minutes if you do the task properly rather than reading past it. The speaking part is not optional decoration — saying it aloud badly is worth more than reading it correctly, because your mouth learns nothing from your eyes. Missing a day is not a reason to stop — the sequence matters, the calendar does not.

A note on the Hindi spellings

Devanagari is easy to get slightly wrong when it is typed by hand — a missing matra, the wrong nukta. If something here looks off to you, trust a native speaker over this page and please tell us so it gets fixed — it takes a moment and a real person reads it. Romanised spellings are a guide to the sound, not a standard: there is no single official way to write Hindi in Latin letters.

Practise today's task with a person

Today's task is a speaking task. Doing it alone is better than not doing it, and doing it with someone who corrects you is worth about five times as much.
