Day 22 — ने — the hardest thing in Hindi

The idea

With a completed transitive verb, the subject takes ने and the verb agrees with the OBJECT, not the subject. मैंने किताब पढ़ी — the verb is feminine because किताब is, regardless of who is speaking. This is split ergativity. It has no English equivalent and self-taught learners almost always fossilise a wrong version of it.

Today's task

Do this, not just read it

Write five sentences with ने and have someone who knows check them. Genuinely — this is the one to get checked.

Words for today

EnglishHindiSounds like
I read a book (m speaker or f, same)मैंने किताब पढ़ीmaine kitaab padhi
he ate foodउसने खाना खायाusne khaana khaaya
she saidउसने कहाusne kaha

The mistake to avoid

Watch for this

Using ने with intransitive verbs. मैंने गया is wrong; it is मैं गया. Only transitive, only perfective.

Where this sits in the thirty days

This is day 8 of 8 in the grammar that carries weight phase (days 15–22), whose job is gender, postpositions and the present tense working together. It assumes you have done day 21. It closes this phase. If any of it feels shaky, that is worth a second pass before moving on — the next phase builds directly on it. Day 23 begins the past tense and real speech phase.

How long today should take

About 21 to 31 minutes if you do the task properly rather than reading past it. Missing a day is not a reason to stop — the sequence matters, the calendar does not.

A note on the Hindi spellings

Devanagari is easy to get slightly wrong when it is typed by hand — a missing matra, the wrong nukta. If something here looks off to you, trust a native speaker over this page and please tell us so it gets fixed — it takes a moment and a real person reads it. Romanised spellings are a guide to the sound, not a standard: there is no single official way to write Hindi in Latin letters.

You are past the point where reading is enough

Days 21 to 30 cover the past tense, ने and real-speed listening. Those three are the ones that self-study reliably gets wrong, because you cannot hear your own errors. An hour a week is enough to stop them setting.
