Thirty days of this gets you the sound system, the script, the present, past and future, gender, and a few hundred words. That is a real foundation and it is roughly a third of the way to simple conversation. The remaining two thirds are almost entirely speaking hours.
Take the level self-test, then book one conversation. One. The gap between reading about Hindi and speaking it does not close by itself.
| English | Hindi | Sounds like |
|---|---|---|
| I am learning Hindi | मैं हिंदी सीख रहा हूँ | main hindi seekh raha hoon |
| Please speak slowly | ज़रा धीरे बोलिए | zara dheere boliye |
| See you later | फिर मिलेंगे | phir milenge |
Starting day 1 again instead of speaking to somebody. Reviewing is comfortable, which is exactly why it is the trap.
This is day 8 of 8 in the past tense and real speech phase (days 23–30), whose job is the two things self-study reliably gets wrong. It assumes you have done day 29. It closes this phase. If any of it feels shaky, that is worth a second pass before moving on — the next phase builds directly on it. This is the last day. What follows is not more days — it is using what you have with a person who corrects you.
About 21 to 31 minutes if you do the task properly rather than reading past it. The speaking part is not optional decoration — saying it aloud badly is worth more than reading it correctly, because your mouth learns nothing from your eyes. Missing a day is not a reason to stop — the sequence matters, the calendar does not.
Devanagari is easy to get slightly wrong when it is typed by hand — a missing matra, the wrong nukta. If something here looks off to you, trust a native speaker over this page and please tell us so it gets fixed — it takes a moment and a real person reads it. Romanised spellings are a guide to the sound, not a standard: there is no single official way to write Hindi in Latin letters.
Days 21 to 30 cover the past tense, ने and real-speed listening. Those three are the ones that self-study reliably gets wrong, because you cannot hear your own errors. An hour a week is enough to stop them setting.
