Hindi numbers look like a hundred unrelated words, and to a large extent they are. But there is one regularity worth knowing: the number ending in nine belongs, in sound, to the ten above it. उनतीस (29) rhymes with तीस (30). उनतालीस (39) rhymes with चालीस (40). उनचास (49) rhymes with पचास (50). The Hindi nine is built by subtracting one from the next ten rather than adding nine to the last one, which is exactly how Latin did it too.
Prices are said in full: दो सौ पचास (do sau pachaas) is 250. Listen for सौ as the pivot — everything before it multiplies, everything after adds. Ages use साल: मैं तीस साल का हूँ. Time uses बजे: तीन बजे is three o'clock. Learn numbers inside these three frames rather than as a list and they stick far better.

Devanagari is easy to get slightly wrong when it is typed by hand — a missing matra, the wrong nukta. If something here looks off to you, trust a native speaker over this page and please tell us so it gets fixed — it takes a moment and a real person reads it. Romanised spellings are a guide to the sound, not a standard: there is no single official way to write Hindi in Latin letters.
Because they are not built from parts. English makes twenty-one out of twenty and one; Hindi has इक्कीस (ikkees), a separate word worn down from a Sanskrit compound. There are effectively a hundred words to learn rather than about thirty.
Yes, and it saves you. Within each block of ten, the ending rhymes with the NEXT ten, not the current one. 29 is उनतीस — leaning on तीस (30), not बीस (20). Same at 39, 49, 59. Once you hear that, the nines stop feeling random.
1 to 20, the round tens, सौ (100) and हज़ार (1,000). That covers prices, ages, times and phone numbers, which is nearly everything a number is used for in conversation.
The Indian numbering system groups differently above a thousand. A lakh (लाख) is 100,000 and a crore (करोड़) is 10,000,000. Prices, salaries and news figures in India are given this way constantly, so it is worth learning early.
Reading a number off a page is not the same as catching one said at speed in a shop. Ten minutes of a tutor calling out prices does more than an hour of the table above.
