Vowels anchor everything: અ આ ઇ ઈ ઉ ઊ એ ઐ ઓ ઔ અં અઃ — thirteen pure sounds. Long-short pairs matter — ઇ vs ઈ changes meaning. Chant them in order daily; the mouth memorises what the ear repeats.
Consonants march in families: ક ખ ગ ઘ (throat), ચ છ જ ઝ (palate), ટ ઠ ડ ઢ (roof), ત થ દ ધ (teeth), પ ફ બ ભ (lips). Family by family, feel where each sound lives — Gujarati pronunciation is geography you can touch.
Special letters crown the set: ય ર લ વ શ ષ સ હ ળ ક્ષ જ્ઞ — with ળ (retroflex L) shared with Marathi. શાળા (school) shows ળ in action; જ્ઞાન (knowledge) shows જ્ઞ. Special letters, everyday words.
Barakshari grids it all: ક કા કિ કી કુ કૂ કે કૈ કો કૌ કં કઃ — each consonant through every vowel. One grid mastered teaches all grids. Read barakshari aloud for a month; Gujarati script becomes a friend for life.

Practice: recall, then use
Use this quick recall drill for Gujarati alphabet. Hide the script and romanisation columns; say the Gujarati form for each cue before revealing its row, then check spelling and sound. The phrase-table speaker buttons provide a model when a matching browser voice is available.
- Letter a (short)
- Letter e
- Barakshari (vowel grid)
Transfer practice. Pick one letter or sign from the examples, trace it slowly, and name its sound before you read a whole word containing it. Then cover the chart and identify the same shape in a new example. This separates visual recognition from pronunciation and helps prevent guessing from a familiar-looking script. Start from અ (a) and decide whether it fits the situation before using it elsewhere.
Context check. For Gujarati alphabet, “Barakshari (vowel grid)” belongs to a particular setting. A common mistake is to treat an English gloss as universal; read the language-specific note above and ask a fluent speaker when local usage differs.

Questions learners ask
Close cousins — Gujarati script drops Devanagari's top headline bar and rounds the letters. Hindi readers recognise most shapes instantly.
The vowel-consonant grid: ક કા કિ કી કુ કૂ કે કૈ કો કૌ — every consonant marries every vowel in order. Master one row fully and the whole grid unlocks.
Vowels first: અ આ ઇ ઈ ઉ ઊ એ ઐ ઓ ઔ — then ક ખ ગ ઘ ચ છ જ ઝ. Sounds before shapes; reading follows speaking.
