Core Gujarati vocabulary

પાણી, ઘર, કામ, પ્રેમ — the words Gujarati daily life runs on.

🔊 Tap any speaker button to hear Gujarati spoken. Too fast or slow? Use the speed button at the bottom-right of the page.

Survival nouns anchor reality: પાણી (water), ખાવાનું (food), ઘર (house), રસ્તો (road). Point at each, say it aloud, use it today — પાણી જોઈએ છે (I want water). Concrete first, abstract later.

People words warm speech: માણસ (person), મિત્ર (friend), મા (mother), બાળક (child). મારો મિત્ર (my friend) introduces proudly; મા calls home. People before things, always.

Describing words add colour: મોટું (big), નાનું (small), સારું (good), નવું (new). Adjectives dance with gender — મોટો ભાઈ (big brother), મોટી બહેન (big sister). Triple-learn each one.

Time and feeling complete the core: આજે (today), પ્રેમ (love), આનંદ (joy), કામ (work). આજે ઘણું કામ છે (there's lots of work today) — then પ્રેમ અને આનંદ balance it. Words for living, not just talking.

Language, culture, and common traps

A note on સરસ. સરસ (saras — nice/great) is Gujarat's universal praise — સરસ છે (it's nice), ખૂબ સરસ (very nice). Food, films, friends' work — praise everything. Generous સરસ earns generous friendship.

Practice: recall, then use

Use this quick recall drill for Core Gujarati vocabulary. Hide the script and romanisation columns; say the Gujarati form for each cue before revealing its row, then check spelling and sound. The phrase-table speaker buttons provide a model when a matching browser voice is available.

  1. Water
  2. Small
  3. Nice / great

Transfer practice. Group the words by the company they keep: notice which word belongs with a person, action, place, or polite reply. Make one short sentence using a pair from the table, then recall the pair tomorrow without looking. Remembering a usable phrase is more valuable than reciting an isolated translation. Start from પાણી (paani) and decide whether it fits the situation before using it elsewhere.

Context check. For Core Gujarati vocabulary, “Nice / great” belongs to a particular setting. A common mistake is to treat an English gloss as universal; read the language-specific note above and ask a fluent speaker when local usage differs.
