Why comprehension lags behind everything else, and the only thing that fixes it.
Listening is the skill that lags, for everybody, in every language. You will be able to build a sentence months before you can reliably understand one built at you. That is normal and it is not a sign you are doing something wrong.
The reason is that reading gives you time and speech does not. In text you can look at a word for as long as you like; in speech it is gone in a fifth of a second, connected to the words around it, with sounds dropped and syllables run together. Teacher-Hindi is slower and cleaner than real Hindi, so a learner who only ever hears their tutor gets a shock in a shop.
What works is graded exposure and volume. Hindi news is read at a steady pace with clear articulation and formal, Sanskritic vocabulary — hard words, easy delivery. Film dialogue is the reverse: everyday vocabulary, fast and slurred. Songs are somewhere between and repeat, which is why they stick. Use all three.
The technique that actually moves the needle: watch ten minutes with subtitles, then the same ten minutes without. The second pass is where the learning happens, because you are now listening for something you know is there rather than guessing.
