Gujarati A2 — A2 Gujarati

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Gujarati A2 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. A2 is one of the six CEFR levels and the A2 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is a teenager, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can talk about your day, shop, order food.
A teenager learning Gujarati at level A2 (teen)
A2 — on the ladder this level is a teenager, age 13: by the end of it the learner can talk about your day, shop, order food. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when A2 is finished

  • Build level-appropriate comprehension and production.
  • Use Devanagari with romanisation and accurate English meaning.
  • Adapt Gujarati to age, relationship, setting, and register.

દવાખાને: દુખે છે, દવા લો

A symptom is the body part plus દુખે છે: માથું દુખે છે, પેટ દુખે છે, ગળું દુખે છે. The advice comes back in the imperative: આ દવા લો, બે દિવસ આરામ કરો.

WordSay itMeaning
દુખવુંdukhvuto hurt, to ache
દવાdavamedicine
આરામaaramrest
તપાસtapascheck-up, examination
ચિઠ્ઠીchitthinote, prescription
Clinic frame

The ache takes the body part as its subject — માથું દુખે છે, literally 'the head aches' — and the duration takes -થી: બે દિવસથી. The doctor replies with લો and કરો, and the frequency sits inside the sentence: દિવસમાં બે વાર.

માથું દુખે છે · બે દિવસથી તાવ છે · આ દવા દિવસમાં બે વાર લો · બે દિવસ આરામ કરો
WordSay itMeaning
માથું દુખે છે.Maathu dukhe chhe.I have a headache.
આ દવા દિવસમાં બે વાર લો.Aa davaa divasmaa be vaar lo.Take this medicine twice a day.
બે દિવસ આરામ કરો.Be divas aaram karo.Rest for two days.
Watch out:
  • મને માથું દુખે છે છે. → માથું દુખે છે. One verb is enough: દુખે છે already carries the ache.
  • તમે આરામ કરો બે દિવસ. → તમે બે દિવસ આરામ કરો. A duration comes before the verb.

Dialogue. Read it aloud twice — once for each speaker.

કપડાં: સાઇઝ, રંગ, બદલવું

Clothes talk asks three things: આ સાઇઝ નાની છે · બીજો રંગ છે? · બદલી શકાય? The size adjective agrees with its noun — નાની સાઇઝ, નાનું કમીઝ — and the possibility of exchange is the passive-looking બદલી શકાય.

WordSay itMeaning
કપડાંkapdaaclothes
સાઇઝsizesize
રંગrangcolour
બદલવુંbadalvuto change, to exchange
પરચૂરણparchooranchange (money), receipt

The adjective agrees with the noun it describes: સાઇઝ is feminine (નાની), કમીઝ is neuter (નાનું). Exchange is expressed with શકાય: બદલી શકાય? — literally 'can it be exchanged?' — and the window is a plain time phrase: પંદર દિવસમાં.

Watch out:
  • આ સાઇઝ નાનું છે. → આ સાઇઝ નાની છે. સાઇઝ is feminine, so the adjective is નાની.
  • હું બદલવું છે. → મારે બદલવું છે. Need takes મારે + infinitive, never the bare હું.

Gujarati A2 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Gujarati A2 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

Gujarati households run on tea and the bargaining that goes with it: ચા is offered before business of any kind, and a refusal is softened with વાંધો નહીં. In the market the price is a starting point — સસ્તું (cheap) and મોંઘું (expensive) are opinions, and asking ઓછું કરો (make it less) is normal, not rude. The polite forms વધારે/ઓછું matter more here than in a supermarket.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

What it says: Today the market was very crowded. I bought tomatoes and potatoes. The shopkeeper said, 'thirty rupees a kilo'. I said, 'make it less'. In the end we settled on twenty-five rupees. Then I went to buy milk. The milkman said, 'tomorrow the milk will come late'. I said, 'no problem'.

The 3 mistakes this level makes

  • આ કિલો કેટલો છે? → આ કિલો કેટલાનું છે? A price is neuter: કેટલાનું.
  • મેં બજાર ગયો. → હું બજાર ગયો. Intransitive જવું takes હું, not the ergative મેં.
  • દૂધવાળો કાલે મોડું આવશે છે. → દૂધવાળો કાલે મોડું આવશે. The future is one word: આવશે.

Your task

Do a market round in Gujarati Write the six lines of a real market round: ask the price (કેટલાનું છે?), say it is expensive, ask for less, agree, ask for one more item, and close with thanks. Then write the same exchange where the shopkeeper says no and you accept it with વાંધો નહીં. The second version is the one that teaches the tone; keep both in your notebook under one heading.

After A2: the A2+ checkpoint

A2+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between Gujarati A2 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at A2+ when you can keep a conversation going, tell a short story. Get there by working the recall drills above and the review deck until nothing on this page surprises you, then open the B1 pages.
