The Hindi sounds a Dutch speaker gets free, the ones that need work, and a drill order that starts with your specific problem.
Verb-final word order, above, and a phonetic inventory that covers most of Hindi's hard consonants. Dutch g and ch prepare you for ख and ग़. Dutch has no trouble with consonant clusters. And a very large share of Dutch speakers already handle two or three languages daily, which is the single strongest predictor of learning another one as an adult. Surinamese-Dutch speakers get far more: Sarnami is a living Hindustani variety and puts them close to fluent already.
These are ordered by how much damage each one does if left alone — not by how hard they are. A sound that changes one word into another matters more than one that merely marks an accent.
| # | What | Why it matters and what to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Retroflex ट ठ ड ढ | New. The most audible gap for a Dutch speaker. |
| 2 | Aspiration | Dutch has no contrastive aspiration. क versus ख needs building. |
| 3 | Flatten the diphthongs | Dutch ij and ui have no Hindi equivalent. Hindi ए and ओ are pure, held vowels with no glide. |
| 4 | ग़ and ख़ — your advantage | Dutch g and ch land close enough that these Persian-origin sounds come almost free. |
Built from the list above rather than from a generic syllabus, so week one is your bottleneck rather than everybody's.
Hindi pairs every plain consonant with an aspirated one — क/ख, प/फ, त/थ, च/छ, ट/ठ — and the difference is a puff of air that changes the word. Hold a sheet of paper a few centimetres from your mouth and say both. It should move clearly for the second of each pair and stay still for the first.
If it moves for both, you are aspirating everything. If it moves for neither, you are aspirating nothing. Both are normal starting points depending on your first language, and both take about a fortnight of deliberate practice.
Two real words differing in exactly one sound. This is the standard technique for training a distinction your language does not make, because it removes every other cue.
| Word | Word | What differs |
|---|---|---|
| कल kal — yesterday/tomorrow | खल khal — villain | क vs ख — aspiration |
| ताल taal — rhythm | टाल Taal — postpone | त vs ट — dental vs retroflex |
| दाल daal — lentils | डाल Daal — branch | द vs ड — dental vs retroflex |
| दीन deen — poor | दिन din — day | ई vs इ — vowel length |
Devanagari is easy to get slightly wrong when it is typed by hand — a missing matra, the wrong nukta. If something here looks off to you, trust a native speaker over this page and please tell us so it gets fixed — it takes a moment and a real person reads it. Romanised spellings are a guide to the sound, not a standard: there is no single official way to write Hindi in Latin letters.
Retroflex ट ठ ड ढ; Aspiration; Flatten the diphthongs; ग़ and ख़ — your advantage. Each is explained on this page with what to do about it.
Partly. You can learn what to listen for, and this page gives you that. What you cannot do alone is hear your own errors — that is what an error is. A learner drilling in isolation for six months arrives with one wrong habit made automatic, not six months of progress.
Comprehensibility matters; sounding native does not. An accent is not a mistake. What is worth fixing is any sound that changes a word into a different word, and on this page those are named specifically.
You cannot hear your own errors — that is what makes them errors. Ten minutes of someone saying yes or no is worth more here than any amount of solo drilling, and it is the difference between an accent that fades and one that sets.
