Hindi grammar for Tamil speakers

Hindi grammar compared with Tamil: what transfers directly, what is genuinely new, and what to learn in which order.

Word order

Identical, and this surprises people. Tamil is Dravidian and Hindi is Indo-Aryan — genuinely unrelated families — but both are firmly subject-object-verb with postpositions. Centuries of contact across the subcontinent left the two with strikingly similar sentence architecture.

Feature by feature, against Tamil

FeatureHow it compares
Word order matchesNo adjustment needed.
Postpositions matchTamil case suffixes behave comparably.
Gender is newTamil marks gender on verbs by person, not on nouns. Hindi's noun gender is a genuinely new system.
Honorifics transferTamil's respectful forms map naturally onto आप.

What is genuinely new

Two significant gaps. Tamil has no grammatical gender in the Hindi sense and no aspirated consonants, and Tamil's writing system does not distinguish voiced from voiceless stops the way Devanagari does. So क, ख, ग, घ collapse towards a single Tamil letter, and separating all four is real work. The gender system must be built from nothing.

The three things every learner must get right

Independent of your first language, Hindi grammar has three load-bearing features. How hard each one is for you is what the table above answers.

1. The verb goes last

मैं हिंदी सीखता हूँ — I Hindi learn am. Completely consistent, no exceptions. The difficulty is not the rule, it is that beginners compose the sentence in their own language first and then rearrange it, which collapses as soon as the sentence gets long.

2. Postpositions, not prepositions

घर को — house-to. They follow the noun, always. Mechanically simple and completely regular.

3. Gender reaches into the verb

Every noun is masculine or feminine, and adjectives and verbs agree. Your own gender appears in your verbs in every sentence you speak: मैं बोलता हूँ from a man, मैं बोलती हूँ from a woman. There is no reliable rule for guessing a noun's gender, so it is learned with the noun, from day one. Postponing this is the single most expensive delay in Hindi.

And the one that defeats self-study: ने

With a completed transitive verb, the subject takes ने and the verb agrees with the object. मैंने किताब पढ़ी — the verb is feminine because किताब is, whoever is speaking. This is split ergativity. The rule is one sentence long and the exceptions are the whole subject, which is why learners working alone reliably fossilise a wrong version of it.

A learning order for Tamil speakers

  1. Days 1–7: the four-way stop distinction. Your one big sound problem, and it is an ear problem before it is a mouth problem.
  2. Days 8–14: Devanagari, which will feel structurally familiar.
  3. Days 15–28: gender, drilled hard, learned with every noun.
  4. Days 29–30: harvest the shared Sanskrit vocabulary — you know more Hindi words than you think.

Notice that this is not the order a general course uses. That is the point of organising by first language — the sequence that works depends on what you already have.

A note on the Hindi spellings

Devanagari is easy to get slightly wrong when it is typed by hand — a missing matra, the wrong nukta. If something here looks off to you, trust a native speaker over this page and please tell us so it gets fixed — it takes a moment and a real person reads it. Romanised spellings are a guide to the sound, not a standard: there is no single official way to write Hindi in Latin letters.

Questions

Is Hindi grammar hard for Tamil speakers?

It depends entirely on which feature. Identical, and this surprises people. Tamil is Dravidian and Hindi is Indo-Aryan — genuinely unrelated families — but both are firmly subject-object-verb with postpositions. Centuries of contact across the subcontinent left the two with strikingly similar sentence architecture.

What is the hardest part?

Two significant gaps. Tamil has no grammatical gender in the Hindi sense and no aspirated consonants, and Tamil's writing system does not distinguish voiced from voiceless stops the way Devanagari does. So क, ख, ग, घ collapse towards a single Tamil letter, and separating all four is real work. The gender system must be built from nothing.

Do I need to learn grammar rules, or can I just absorb it?

Adults learn grammar faster by being told the rule than by inferring it — that is one of the few genuine advantages adults have over children. Learn the rule, then produce twenty sentences of your own with it. Reading the rule alone does almost nothing.

Get the ने construction taught, not read

Everything else on this page can be learned from a table. Split ergativity cannot — the rule is short, the exceptions are the subject, and a learner working alone generally sets a wrong version of it before noticing.
