Japanese A2 — Elementary: past, て-form, places, food

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Japanese A2 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. A2 is one of the six CEFR levels and the A2 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is a teenager, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can talk about your day, shop, order food.
A teenager learning Japanese at level A2 (teen)
A2 — on the ladder this level is a teenager, age 13: by the end of it the learner can talk about your day, shop, order food. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when A2 is finished

 • Talk about past with ました/でした
 • Request and describe ongoing actions with て
 • Move around, eat out and shop

Recall drills — 126 more questions from the A2 words

These 126 drills are generated from the Japanese A2 vocabulary list — the words of “Past and て-form” through “Food and shopping”, in both directions: recognition (word → meaning) and production (meaning → word). They re-ask what the course data already contains; no answer here was written by a machine, and a generated drill is practice, never a lesson.

Japanese A2 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Japanese A2 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

The convenience store and the station are the two rooms of Japanese daily life: at the konbini you pay at a counter facing the door, the staff say いらっしゃいませ, and おねがいします closes your side of the exchange. Trains keep to the minute and the announcement tells you which door opens. むりょう (free) and かくやす (cheap) are shouted from shop fronts, and the useful skill is asking いくらですか without repeating the noun.

Source (named, not linked): en.wikipedia.org, the article “Japanese cuisine”.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

きのう えきで きっぷを かいました。みどりの まどぐちは こんでいましたから、じどうはんばいきで かいました。とうきょうまで さんびゃくえん でした。でんしゃは おくれませんでした。つぎは ひるごはんを コンビニで かいます。

What it says: Yesterday I bought a ticket at the station. The green counter was crowded, so I bought it at the vending machine. It was three hundred yen to Tokyo. The train was not late. Next I will buy lunch at the convenience store.

Listening — one voice, one text

Use the speaker button to hear this text with a browser voice tagged ja-JP; playback starts only after a click. If no matching voice is installed, read it aloud yourself — the rhythm is the point.

てんいん: いらっしゃいませ。
ゆき: すみません、この おべんとうは いくらですか。
てんいん: ごひゃくえん です。
ゆき: じゃ、これを おねがいします。

What it says: Shop assistant: Welcome. Yuki: Excuse me, how much is this bento? Assistant: It is five hundred yen. Yuki: Then this one, please.

10 idioms and fixed phrases

IdiomWord for wordWhat it means

The 3 mistakes this level makes

 • コーヒー が ください。 → コーヒーを ください。 ください takes を: the thing requested is the object.
 • えき に いきます です。 → えきに いきます。 ます verbs are already polite; です does not follow.
 • いくら です か この はん。 → この はんは いくらですか。 The topic comes first; か closes the sentence.

Your task

Buy a ticket and lunch in Japanese Write both halves of two short exchanges: at the ticket machine (asking for the fare to one station, paying, thanking) and at the konbini (asking the price of one item, asking for it, saying thank you). Use すみません once per exchange. Then say the same two exchanges aloud, replacing the noun with a different item each time, so the frame rather than the vocabulary is what you remember.

After A2: the A2+ checkpoint

A2+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between Japanese A2 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at A2+ when you can keep a conversation going, tell a short story. Get there by working the recall drills above and the review deck until nothing on this page surprises you, then open the B1 pages.
