Japanese B1 — Intermediate: plain forms, potential, family, opinions

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Japanese B1 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. B1 is one of the six CEFR levels and the B1 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is a young adult, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can explain a problem, write a message, follow a podcast.

ものがたりの あいず: まず、それから、とうとう

A story in Japanese is built from signposts: まず (first), それから (then), そのあと (after that) and とうとう (in the end). They carry the sequence so the verbs can stay in one tense.

WordSay itMeaning
まずmazufirst of all
それからsorekaraand then
そのあとsono atoafter that
とうとうtoutouin the end, finally
きっかけkikkaketrigger, starting point
Narration signposts

The signposts stand at the head of their sentence and the tense stays in the past for the whole sequence. とうとう marks the last event and nothing follows it; a new sentence after it breaks the ending.

まず …ました · それから …ました · そのあと …ました · とうとう …ました
WordSay itMeaning

それから あるいて いえへ かえりました。Sorekara aruite ie e kaerimashita. Then I walked home.

Watch out:
 • まず、でんしゃに のります。それから、あるいて かえりました。 → まず、でんしゃに のりました。それから、あるいて かえりました。 A narration keeps one tense: the whole sequence goes in the past.
 • とうとう おわりました、それから。 → とうとう おわりました。 とうとう closes the sequence; nothing follows it.

Japanese B1 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Japanese B1 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

Keigo is not a separate language but a set of choices about where the other person stands: いらっしゃる for their coming, うかがう for your going, いただく for your receiving, さしあげる for your giving. The office day is bracketed by おつかれさまです at the end and おはようございます at the start, and a request between colleagues is usually a て-form plus もらえますか rather than an imperative.

Source (named, not linked): en.wikipedia.org, the article “Honorific speech in Japanese”.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

あしたは ぶちょうに ほうこくします。まず データを かくにんして、それから スライドを つくります。むずかしい てんは そうだんしたいと おもいます。おそくなる かもしれませんから、さきに メールを おくります。

What it says: Tomorrow I will report to the department manager. First I will check the data, then make the slides. I think I want to discuss the difficult points. Since I may be late, I will send an email in advance.

Listening — one voice, one text

Use the speaker button to hear this text with a browser voice tagged ja-JP; playback starts only after a click. If no matching voice is installed, read it aloud yourself — the rhythm is the point.

たろう: あしたの かいぎ、でられますか。
ゆき: すみません、ごごは むりです。あさなら だいじょうぶです。
たろう: じゃ、あさに しましょう。おつかれさまです。
ゆき: おつかれさまです。

What it says: Taro: Can you attend tomorrow's meeting? Yuki: Sorry, the afternoon is impossible for me. The morning is fine. Taro: Then let us make it the morning. Thank you for your work. Yuki: Thank you for your work.

10 idioms and fixed phrases

IdiomWord for wordWhat it means
と おもいますto omoimasuI think that …
かもしれませんkamo shiremasenit may be that …
たことが ありますta koto ga arimasuI have done … before
てみますte mimasuI will try doing …

よていyoteiplan, schedule
やくそくyakusokuappointment, promise
そうだんしますsoudan shimasuI will consult you
さきにsaki niin advance, first

The 3 mistakes this level makes

 • あした かいぎに でますと おもいます。 → あした かいぎに でると おもいます。 と おもいます takes the plain form, not ます.
 • にほんへ いったが あります。 → にほんへ いったことが あります。 Experience takes たことが あります.
 • てみる します。 → やってみます。 てみる attaches to the verb: やってみます.

Your task

Write tomorrow's plan with two hedges Write five lines in Japanese about tomorrow: two things you will do (plain form + と おもいます), one thing that may happen (かもしれません), one thing you have done before (たことが あります) and one request to a colleague with the て-form + もらえますか. Then rewrite the middle line as あした いそがしいです and notice how much the hedge was doing.

After B1: the B1+ checkpoint

B1+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between Japanese B1 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at B1+ when you can work in the language, argue a point politely. Get there by working the recall drills above and the review deck until nothing on this page surprises you, then open the B2 pages.
