Russian B1 — Intermediate: motion verbs, dative, opinions

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Russian B1 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. B1 is one of the six CEFR levels and the B1 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is a young adult, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can explain a problem, write a message, follow a podcast.

  • Use dative for liking, age and giving
  • Argue opinions and talk weather and plans

Отпуск: планы и сравнение

Comparatives are short and irregular: дешевле (cheaper), дороже (more expensive), лучше (better), хуже (worse), ближе (closer). A comparison takes чем or the genitive: море дороже, чем горы; море дороже гор. Plans for the holidays use поеду / поедем or собираюсь + infinitive.

WordSay itMeaning
отпускOHt-pooskholiday, leave
мореMOH-ryehsea
гораgah-RAHmountain
дешевлеdeh-SHEHV-lyehcheaper
собиратьсяsah-bee-RAHT-syahto intend, to be about to
Сравнение и планы

The comparative does not take более: говорят дешевле, not более дешёвый. The second half of the comparison is either чем + nominative or the genitive alone: поезд дешевле, чем самолёт = поезд дешевле самолёта. Собираться + infinitive expresses an intention, and поедем is the first person plural of a settled plan.

Мы собираемся поехать на море в июле.mih sah-bee-RAH-yehm-syah pah-YEH-khahty nah MOH-ryeh v ee-YOO-leh.We intend to go to the sea in July.
Watch out:
  • Море более дорогое, чем горы. → Море дороже, чем горы. The simple comparative дороже; более belongs to the adjective дорогой.
  • Я собираюсь поеду в отпуск. → Я собираюсь поехать в отпуск. Собираться takes the infinitive.

They re-ask what the course data already contains; no answer here was written by a machine, and a generated drill is practice, never a lesson.

Russian B1 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Russian B1 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

Дача is not a country house and not a farm: it is a small plot with a wooden house, a garden and a greenhouse, reached by elektrichka on Friday evening and left on Sunday. Families grow cucumbers, tomatoes, berries and dill, and the summer's work is measured in jars — соленья, варенье, компот — put up for the winter. The dacha is also where Russian weather is actually experienced: открытие сезона in May, the short hot июль, and закрытие сезона in October with the water turned off.

Source (named, not linked): en.wikipedia.org, the article “Dacha”.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

В пятницу вечером мы едем на дачу. Электричка идёт сорок минут, потом десять минут пешком. На даче нас ждут грядки: огурцы, помидоры и зелень. В субботу папа копает, мама поливает, а я собираю ягоды. Вечером мы пьём чай на веранде. В воскресенье мы закрываем дом и возвращаемся в город.

What it says: On Friday evening we go to the dacha. The suburban train takes forty minutes, then ten minutes on foot. At the dacha the vegetable beds wait for us: cucumbers, tomatoes and herbs. On Saturday dad digs, mum waters, and I pick berries. In the evening we drink tea on the veranda. On Sunday we close the house and go back to the city.

Listening — one voice, one text

Use the speaker button to hear this text with a browser voice tagged ru-RU; playback starts only after a click. If no matching voice is installed, read it aloud yourself — the rhythm is the point.

Какая погода будет в субботу? — Обещают дождь. — Тогда поедем на дачу в воскресенье. — Хорошо, но если будет дождь, останемся дома.

What it says: What will the weather be like on Saturday? — They promise rain. — Then we'll go to the dacha on Sunday. — Fine, but if it rains we'll stay at home.

10 idioms and fixed phrases

The 3 mistakes this level makes

  • Я иду на дачу каждый weekend. → Я езжу на дачу каждые выходные. Regular trips take ездить; идти is only the trip happening now.
  • Я прочитал эту книгу два часа. → Я читал эту книгу два часа. A duration spent on the process takes the imperfective читал.
  • В субботу будет дождь, поэтому мы поедем на дачу, несмотря на дождь. → Если в субботу будет дождь, мы поедем на дачу в воскресенье. A condition is said once, with если — not repeated.

Your task

Планы на выходные Write a six-line plan for a weekend at the dacha: what the weather will be, who does which job, what you will cook, and what happens if it rains. Use three structures from this rung — the future with буду/поедем, a real condition with если + future, and one motion verb pair (ехать / ездить) — then read it aloud and check the aspect of каждое verb: process or result.

After B1: the B1+ checkpoint

B1+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between Russian B1 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at B1+ when you can work in the language, argue a point politely. Get there by working the recall drills above and the review deck until nothing on this page surprises you, then open the B2 pages.
