Russian B2 — Advanced: cases mastery, nuance, culture

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Russian B2 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. B2 is one of the six CEFR levels and the B2 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is an adult, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can read a newspaper, write a real letter, joke.
An adult learning Russian at level B2 (adult)
B2 — on the ladder this level is an adult, age 34: by the end of it the learner can read a newspaper, write a real letter, joke. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

Кем быть: профессия и инструмент

The instrumental answers кем? and чем? — with what and as what. Стать + instrumental says what someone became (он стал врачом), работать + instrumental says what someone works as, and пользоваться + instrumental says what they use. The same case covers transport: ехать автобусом and на автобусе are both correct, the first more bookish.

Письмо с аргументом: за и против

A written argument in Russian names its parts: с одной стороны … с другой стороны, во-первых … во-вторых, следовательно, однако, тем не менее. Преимущество and недостаток are the two halves of a judgement, and вывод closes it. The register is formal, so the sentences stay long and the verbs nominal: это приводит к…

С одной стороны and с другой стороны open the two halves without taking sides yet. Во-первых starts an enumeration the reader can follow, and следовательно or таким образом draws the conclusion. However is однако (bookish) and тем не менее (conceding): довод верный, тем не менее вывод спорный. Вывод states what follows, not what you wish followed.

Книга и фильм: экранизация

A film made from a book is экранизация, and the argument about it uses four words: сюжет (plot), герой, режиссёр and сценарий. Снять фильм по книге is the verb — по + dative. The judgement is made with удачная / неудачная экранизация and the reason is given with потому что or благодаря + dative.

Экранизация: по книге или про книгу

Экранизация романа — the book stands in the genitive. Снять фильм по роману names the source with по + dative. Благодаря + dative gives a positive cause and из-за + genitive a negative one: благодаря актёрам, из-за сценария. The comparison with the book is made with по сравнению с + instrumental.

экранизация + genitive · снять фильм по + dative · удачная, потому что …

Watch out:
  • Это экранизация по роману. → Это экранизация романа. Экранизация takes the genitive: романа.
  • Благодаря плохого сценария фильм скучный. → Из-за плохого сценария фильм скучный. A negative cause takes из-за + genitive; благодаря is only for the good.

Russian B2 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Russian B2 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

Russian literature is read at home the way other countries read scripture: Пушкин's Евгений Онегин supplies the lines people quote without noticing, Достоевский and Толстой are argued about as moral authorities, and Чехов's plays are still cast every season. The theatre carries the same weight — МХТ, Большой, Вахтангов — and a ticket is bought months ahead. In speech the canon appears as shorthand: «пушкинский вопрос», «чеховское настроение», «толстовское» as an adjective for a whole way of looking at a village.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

В субботу мы были в театре. Давали Чехова — «Вишнёвый сад». Зал был полный; многие пришли с книгами. После третьего действия мы вышли в фойе и спорили: конец у пьесы смешной или трагический? Мой друг считает, что Чехов не смеётся над героями, а жалеет их. Я не согласен, но его аргументы сильнее.

What it says: On Saturday we were at the theatre. They were performing Chekhov — 'The Cherry Orchard'. The hall was full; many had come with books. After the third act we went out into the foyer and argued: is the end of the play funny or tragic? My friend thinks Chekhov does not laugh at his characters but pities them. I disagree, but his arguments are stronger.

Listening — one voice, one text

Use the speaker button to hear this text with a browser voice tagged ru-RU; playback starts only after a click. If no matching voice is installed, read it aloud yourself — the rhythm is the point.

Ты дочитал роман? — Дочитал вчера. — И как тебе конец? — Скажу честно: я ждал другого. Но чем больше думаю, тем больше он мне нравится.

What it says: Have you finished the novel? — I finished it yesterday. — And how do you like the ending? — Honestly: I expected something else. But the more I think about it, the more I like it.

The 3 mistakes this level makes

  • У меня нет время. → У меня нет времени. Нет takes the genitive: времени.
  • Я горжусь за тебя. → Я горжусь тобой. Гордиться takes the instrumental, with no за.
  • Я пришёл с друг. → Я пришёл с другом. С takes the instrumental: с другом.

Your task

Рецензия на вечер Write a short review of a book, a play or a film you know: what it is, what it argues, one thing you agree with and one thing you do not, and what you would tell a friend. Use at least one genitive after нет / нет времени and one instrumental with с or гордиться. Then rewrite the last sentence so that it concedes something, with хотя or однако.
