Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Tamil B1 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. B1 is one of the six CEFR levels and the B1 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is a young adult, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can explain a problem, write a message, follow a podcast.
A young adult learning Tamil at level B1 (youth)
B1 — on the ladder this level is a young adult, age 20: by the end of it the learner can explain a problem, write a message, follow a podcast. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when B1 is finished

  • Communicate complex ideas with level-appropriate accuracy.
  • Adapt spoken and written register to audience and purpose.
  • Interpret and produce Tamil with cultural and pragmatic awareness.

ஆய்வும் சுற்றுச்சூழலும்

Present a small observation from a school or neighbourhood project without turning one measurement into a universal claim. Compare two days with -ஐ விட; அதே நேரத்தில் introduces a balancing point, and எனவே marks a reasoned conclusion.

Comparing observations

Use -ஐ விட after the comparison point: செவ்வாயை விட புதன்கிழமை வெப்பம் குறைந்தது. அதே நேரத்தில் signals a balancing observation. End with a proportionate claim: எனவே இந்த மாதிரியில் ...; it is not yet a claim about every neighbourhood.

Tamil B1 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Tamil B1 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

A Tamil meal is built around rice, and the banana leaf is its plate: rice in the middle, sambar and rasam poured over it in that order, poriyal and kootu along the side, and a piece of appalam to finish. Filter coffee — காபி, frothed between two tumblers until it foams — ends the meal and the argument that came with it. The kitchens differ by district: Chettinad cooks with pepper and fennel, Madurai with more chilli, Chennai's streets with idli and dosa at every hour. Food vocabulary is also the vocabulary of hospitality: சாப்பிட்டீர்களா? is a question about wellbeing, not only about lunch.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

What it says: At the weekend friends came home. Mother served rice on a banana leaf; first sambar, then rasam. My friend Karthik eats very spicy Chettinad style. 'The taste is different here,' he said. At the end the coffee came; father asked: 'Another tumbler?' We went on talking for half an hour. After the meal mother said: 'Eating at home is not just rice, it is memory.'

Listening — one voice, one text

Use the speaker button to hear this text with a browser voice tagged ta-IN; playback starts only after a click. If no matching voice is installed, read it aloud yourself — the rhythm is the point.

சாப்பிட்டீர்களா? — ஆமா, சாப்பிட்டேன், நன்றி. — இன்னும் கொஞ்சம் சோறு? — போதும், வயிறு நிறைந்தது. காபி மட்டும் குடிப்பேன்.

What it says: Have you eaten? — Yes, I have eaten, thank you. — A little more rice? — That is enough, my stomach is full. I will only drink coffee.

The 3 mistakes this level makes

  • அம்மா சோறு பரிமாறினார் ஒரு இலையில். → அம்மா ஒரு இலையில் சோறு பரிமாறினார். The finite verb closes the clause; the adverbial phrase stays before it.
  • நான் ஒரு தம்ளர் காபி குடித்தேன் விரைவாக. → நான் ஒரு தம்ளர் காபியை விரைவாகக் குடித்தேன். The object marked by -ஐ stays next to the verb it belongs to.
  • சாப்பிட்டீர்களா? — ஆமா, சாப்பிட்டேன். → சாப்பிட்டீர்களா? — ஆமாம், சாப்பிட்டேன். ஆமாம் is the written form; ஆமா belongs to speech.

Your task

விருந்துக்கு நன்றி Write a short account of a meal you remember: who cooked, what was served, one comparison between two kitchens or two cooks, and a closing sentence with a proverb-like comment. Use two relative participles (நான் சாப்பிட்ட பிரியாணி), one comparative with -ஐ விட (சாம்பார் ரசத்தை விட காரம்) and one reported speech with என்று. Read it aloud and mark every place where you would shorten the word in speech.

After B1: the B1+ checkpoint

B1+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between Tamil B1 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at B1+ when you can work in the language, argue a point politely. Get there by working the recall drills above and the review deck until nothing on this page surprises you, then open the B2 pages.
