Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Tamil B2 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. B2 is one of the six CEFR levels and the B2 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is an adult, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can read a newspaper, write a real letter, joke.
An adult learning Tamil at level B2 (adult)
B2 — on the ladder this level is an adult, age 34: by the end of it the learner can read a newspaper, write a real letter, joke. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when B2 is finished

  • Communicate complex ideas with level-appropriate accuracy.
  • Adapt spoken and written register to audience and purpose.
  • Interpret and produce Tamil with cultural and pragmatic awareness.

Tamil B2 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Tamil B2 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

Tamil cinema is not a single genre: the studios and theatres of Chennai support commercial drama, political satire, intimate independent films and adaptations of short fiction. Kodambakkam — a Chennai neighbourhood with many studios — is so closely associated with Tamil-language film that it is nicknamed its 'Hollywood'. Songs are not an intermission: lyrics can carry the scene's argument, a melody can return as a character changes, and the playback singer may be a different artist from the actor whose mouth moves on screen. Listening closely is a way to hear register and metaphor as well as plot.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

What it says: After hearing the new film's song, Meena looked up its lyrics. 'This song does not summarise the story; it changes the heroine's decision,' she said. The director had made that line sound again in a later scene. The first time it seemed a love song; the second time it sounded like resistance. We saw in the credits that the singing voice and the actress's voice were not the same. When the music changed, the scene's meaning changed too.

Listening — one voice, one text

Use the speaker button to hear this text with a browser voice tagged ta-IN; playback starts only after a click. If no matching voice is installed, read it aloud yourself — the rhythm is the point.

படத்தின் முடிவு உங்களுக்குப் பிடித்ததா? — பிடித்தது; ஆனால் பாடல் மீண்டும் வரும் விதம் கதையின் கருத்தை மாற்றியது. — எந்த வரி? — «நான் காத்திருக்க மாட்டேன்» என்ற வரி. முதலில் அது காதலாக இருந்தது; பிறகு எதிர்ப்பாக மாறியது.

What it says: Did you like the film's ending? — I did, but the way the song returns changed the story's idea. — Which line? — The line, 'I will not wait.' At first it was love; later it became resistance.

The 3 mistakes this level makes

  • பாடல் காட்சியைப் பொருள் மாறியது. → பாடல் காட்சியின் பொருளை மாற்றியது. பொருள் is the object of மாற்றியது, so it takes -ஐ; காட்சியின் marks possession.
  • நடிகை பாடலைப் பாடப்பட்டாள். → பாடல் பாடப்பட்டது. The impersonal passive uses the thing as subject: பாடல் பாடப்பட்டது.
  • படம் நன்றாக இருந்தாலும், ஆனால் நீளம் அதிகம். → படம் நன்றாக இருந்தாலும், நீளம் அதிகம். The concessive இருந்தாலும் already means 'although'; do not add ஆனால்.

Your task

ஒரு காட்சியின் இரு வாசிப்புகள் Choose a film scene or song whose meaning changes when you hear it again. Write a short review with a neutral summary, your interpretation, and one alternative reading. Use a concessive clause with இருந்தாலும், report one line with என்று, and explain how the sound or image changes the audience's inference. Do not retell the whole plot; identify the precise turning point.

After B2: the B2+ checkpoint
