Hindi grammar for Indonesian speakers

Hindi grammar compared with Indonesian: what transfers directly, what is genuinely new, and what to learn in which order.

Word order

Subject-verb-object, so Hindi's verb-final order is new. Indonesian's flexibility about topic position helps a little, no more.

Feature by feature, against Indonesian

FeatureHow it compares
Everything inflectsThe core adjustment. Gender, number, person and formality all marked, in every sentence.
PostpositionsNew in position, simple in concept.
Shared Sanskrit vocabularyNot grammar, but worth stating: this is the fastest route to your first thousand words.
No reduplication in HindiIndonesian's buku-buku plural has no Hindi equivalent. Hindi changes the ending instead.

What is genuinely new

Almost the whole consonant system. Indonesian has no aspirated consonants and no retroflex series, so both distinctions must be built from nothing — that is ten of Hindi's thirty-three consonants. Inflection is the other: Indonesian marks very little on the word, while Hindi marks gender, number and formality on nouns, adjectives and verbs at once.

The three things every learner must get right

Independent of your first language, Hindi grammar has three load-bearing features. How hard each one is for you is what the table above answers.

1. The verb goes last

मैं हिंदी सीखता हूँ — I Hindi learn am. Completely consistent, no exceptions. The difficulty is not the rule, it is that beginners compose the sentence in their own language first and then rearrange it, which collapses as soon as the sentence gets long.

2. Postpositions, not prepositions

घर को — house-to. They follow the noun, always. Mechanically simple and completely regular.

3. Gender reaches into the verb

Every noun is masculine or feminine, and adjectives and verbs agree. Your own gender appears in your verbs in every sentence you speak: मैं बोलता हूँ from a man, मैं बोलती हूँ from a woman. There is no reliable rule for guessing a noun's gender, so it is learned with the noun, from day one. Postponing this is the single most expensive delay in Hindi.

And the one that defeats self-study: ने

With a completed transitive verb, the subject takes ने and the verb agrees with the object. मैंने किताब पढ़ी — the verb is feminine because किताब is, whoever is speaking. This is split ergativity. The rule is one sentence long and the exceptions are the whole subject, which is why learners working alone reliably fossilise a wrong version of it.

A learning order for Indonesian speakers

  1. Days 1–8: consonants. Aspiration and retroflex together — ten new sounds is your real workload and it is entirely ear training.
  2. Days 9–14: harvest the Sanskrit layer. Two hundred words for almost no effort.
  3. Days 15–22: Devanagari.
  4. Days 23–30: inflection, continuously. It is a habit rather than a concept, and habits respond to practice with a person.

Notice that this is not the order a general course uses. That is the point of organising by first language — the sequence that works depends on what you already have.

A note on the Hindi spellings

Devanagari is easy to get slightly wrong when it is typed by hand — a missing matra, the wrong nukta. If something here looks off to you, trust a native speaker over this page and please tell us so it gets fixed — it takes a moment and a real person reads it. Romanised spellings are a guide to the sound, not a standard: there is no single official way to write Hindi in Latin letters.

Questions

Is Hindi grammar hard for Indonesian speakers?

It depends entirely on which feature. Subject-verb-object, so Hindi's verb-final order is new. Indonesian's flexibility about topic position helps a little, no more.

What is the hardest part?

Almost the whole consonant system. Indonesian has no aspirated consonants and no retroflex series, so both distinctions must be built from nothing — that is ten of Hindi's thirty-three consonants. Inflection is the other: Indonesian marks very little on the word, while Hindi marks gender, number and formality on nouns, adjectives and verbs at once.

Do I need to learn grammar rules, or can I just absorb it?

Adults learn grammar faster by being told the rule than by inferring it — that is one of the few genuine advantages adults have over children. Learn the rule, then produce twenty sentences of your own with it. Reading the rule alone does almost nothing.

Get the ने construction taught, not read

Everything else on this page can be learned from a table. Split ergativity cannot — the rule is short, the exceptions are the subject, and a learner working alone generally sets a wrong version of it before noticing.
