Not general beginner errors — the ones that come specifically from having Russian as a first language, which means they are predictable, and therefore preventable.
Most learner errors correct themselves with exposure. A small number do not: they become automatic before you notice, and unlearning an automatic habit takes far longer than learning it correctly once. Those are the ones below.
The reason they fossilise is simple and uncomfortable: you cannot hear your own errors. That is what an error is. Six months of solo practice does not produce six months of progress — it produces one wrong habit, now permanent.
| The mistake | Why it happens and what it costs |
|---|---|
| Aspiration | New. The क/ख series. |
| Retroflex | New, though Russian ш and ж are produced in a comparable region and help a little. |
| No vowel reduction | Russian reduces unstressed о to an a-like sound. Hindi does not reduce anything. |
| Palatalisation is not a Hindi feature | Russian's soft consonants have no Hindi equivalent; do not carry them across. |
| The area | What goes wrong |
|---|---|
| Case → postposition | Direct conceptual transfer. Learn Hindi's postpositions as cases and it will click immediately. |
| Aspect | Russian's perfective/imperfective habit maps usefully onto Hindi's completed and continuous forms. |
| Gender, three to two | Russian has three, Hindi has two. Simpler. |
| No articles in either | Nothing to learn, nothing to unlearn. |
Learning nouns without their gender means every adjective and every verb is a coin flip. Retrofitting gender onto a thousand words later takes roughly ten times as long as learning it with them.
मैंने गया is wrong; it is मैं गया. Only transitive, only perfective.
The correct structure makes the thing the subject: मुझे पसंद है — to me it is pleasing. Hindi does this with a whole family of experiences: hunger, thirst, liking, knowing.
Film dialogue is written for characters who already know each other. तू with a stranger, a waiter or anyone senior is a real insult, where a wrong verb ending is merely a wrong verb ending. Default to आप.
All three help. None of them replaces a person telling you that the word you just said was a different word, which is the only mechanism that reliably works.
Devanagari is easy to get slightly wrong when it is typed by hand — a missing matra, the wrong nukta. If something here looks off to you, trust a native speaker over this page and please tell us so it gets fixed — it takes a moment and a real person reads it. Romanised spellings are a guide to the sound, not a standard: there is no single official way to write Hindi in Latin letters.
Aspiration — New. The क/ख series.
Almost universally no. The common experience of attempting Hindi in India is warmth, not correction. The bigger risk is being answered in English out of helpfulness — say मैं हिंदी सीख रहा हूँ, हिंदी में बोलिए and it usually works.
The ones that change a word into a different word, and register errors. A wrong verb ending is a wrong verb ending; using तू with a stranger is genuinely rude. The second is the one worth worrying about.
Every mistake on this page is cheap to fix in week two and expensive in year two. One hour a week with someone who will correct you is the difference, and it is a point about physics rather than a sales pitch — you cannot hear yourself.
