Amharic hands a Hindi learner the single biggest structural advantage there is, and almost nobody says so: the verb goes at the end. Hindi's word order, the thing that makes English speakers rebuild every sentence in their head for six months, is already how you speak. Amharic also uses postpositions and a case-like marking system, which is exactly what ने and को do. Ethiopia has had substantial Indian involvement in education for generations — Indian teachers staffed Ethiopian schools in large numbers through the twentieth century. And Ge'ez script works like Devanagari: a consonant carries an inherent vowel modified by marks, so the system is familiar.

Devanagari is easy to get slightly wrong when it is typed by hand — a missing matra, the wrong nukta. Romanised spellings are a guide to the sound, not a standard: there is no single official way to write Hindi in Latin letters.
