क ख ग

Hindi consonants — व्यंजन (vyanjan) — are thirty-three letters arranged by where in your mouth the sound is made. That arrangement, from the alphabet guide, is also your writing syllabus: learn one row at a time, because letters in the same row share the same skeleton. Every letter below draws itself — trace with your finger first, pen second. Headline last, always.

क वर्ग — throat row: क ख ग घ ङ

क (ka) is the skeleton key of half the script — learn it first and learn it well. ख (kha), ग (ga) and घ (gha) all reuse its left half with different right sides. ङ (nga) is rare on its own; recognise it and move on.

च वर्ग — palate row: च छ ज झ ञ

One left-hand loop serves च (cha), छ (chha), ज (ja) and झ (jha) — master that loop and the row falls into place. Beginners mix up छ and ज most; write them as a pair until they separate. ञ (nya) is rare; recognition is enough.

ट वर्ग — roof row: ट ठ ड ढ ण

The curled-tongue row from the alphabet guide's hard section. Two pairs: ट/ठ (ṭa/ṭha) and ड/ढ (ḍa/ḍha) — inside each pair the second letter adds one inner stroke. ण (ṇa) closes the row. Say each sound aloud as you write; this row is where the tongue does the learning.

त वर्ग — teeth row: त थ द ध न

The busiest row in Hindi — त and न appear in a huge share of all words, so neatness here pays off everywhere. The five are variations on one skeleton: learn त, then spot how थ, द, ध and न each change exactly one part of it.

प वर्ग — lips row: प फ ब भ म

A boxy left side shared by प (pa), फ (pha), ब (ba) and भ (bha) — keep the box square and the row stays legible. म (ma) breaks the pattern with its two humps and tail; give it its own practice line.

The last eight: य र ल व · श ष स ह

य र ल व (ya ra la va) flow without lifting the pen — write them fast and loose. श ष स (sha sha sa) are three sisters: same family, different left edge, so drill them as a triple and never alone. ह (ha) ends the alphabet running. Note both श and ष sound like sha in modern Hindi — spelling tells them apart, not sound.

When letters join: the halant

Sometimes two consonants fuse into one block, like क्ष or ज्ञ. The join is written with a small slanting mark called हलंत (halant) under the first letter — it strips that letter's built-in a so the two sounds merge. You don't need to write conjuncts yet; just recognise the mark. The name guide shows it in action on English names.

Next step: the Barakhadi — where every consonant you just learned meets every vowel, and reading begins.

Quick check

Why learn consonants row by row?

Letters in the same row share a skeleton — learn क properly and ख, ग, घ come cheap. Random order wastes that.

Which two letters do beginners mix up most in the च row?

छ (chha) and ज (ja). Drill them as a pair until your hand tells them apart.

What does the halant mark do?

It strips a consonant's built-in 'a' so it can fuse with the next letter — the join behind conjuncts like क्ष.
