Bengali A2 — Elementary: past, future, postpositions, food

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Bengali A2 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. A2 is one of the six CEFR levels and the A2 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is a teenager, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can talk about your day, shop, order food.
A teenager learning Bengali at level A2 (teen)
A2 — on the ladder this level is a teenager, age 13: by the end of it the learner can talk about your day, shop, order food. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when A2 is finished

 • Talk about past and future correctly
 • Use কে/থেকে/র/এ in places
 • Order food and shop with prices

Time words that decide the tense: গতকাল, আজ, আগামীকাল

Bengali lets the time word carry the tense: গতকাল takes a past verb, আগামীকাল a future one, আজ present or perfect. Put the time word first and the rest of the sentence follows it.

Past, present, future verbs

গতকাল আমি বাজারে গিয়েছিলাম. আজ আমি বাড়িতে আছি. আগামীকাল আমি যাব. The -েছিলাম form means 'had gone' and is the normal past in stories; -লাম is the plain past.

Bengali A2 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Bengali A2 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

The Bengali year turns in mid-April with পহেলা বৈশাখ, and the greeting শুভ নববর্ষ is exchanged in both Dhaka and Kolkata. Shops open new account books (হালখাতা), families eat পান্তা-ইলিশ, and the day is deliberately loud, sweet and public. It is the one festival where the two Bengals do the same thing on the same morning.

Source (named, not linked): en.wikipedia.org, the article “Pohela Boishakh”.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

গতকাল আমি আর রাতুল বাজারে গিয়েছিলাম। আমরা ফল আর মিষ্টি কিনেছি। রাতুল বলল, «আগামীকাল নববর্ষ, তাই আজ বেশি কিনতে হবে»। আমি হেসে বললাম, «ঠিক আছে, কিন্তু টাকা কে দেবে?» সে বলল, «আমি দেব»। শুনে আমার খুশি লাগল।

What it says: Yesterday Ratul and I went to the market. We bought fruit and sweets. Ratul said, 'Tomorrow is the new year, so we have to buy more today.' I laughed and said, 'All right, but who will pay?' He said, 'I will pay.' Hearing that made me happy.

Listening — one voice, one text

রাতুল: আজ বাজারে কী কিনবে?
মিতা: কিছু ফল আর দুধ। তুমি?
রাতুল: আমি রুটি আর সবজি নেব।
মিতা: দাম কত? খুব বেশি হলে আমি নেব না।

What it says: Ratul: What will you buy at the market today? Mita: Some fruit and milk. You? Ratul: I'll take bread and vegetables. Mita: What's the price? If it is too much I won't take it.

The 3 mistakes this level makes

 • আমি গতকাল বাজারে যাব। → আমি গতকাল বাজারে গিয়েছিলাম। গতকাল is past; the verb has to be past.
 • দামটা খুব বেশি হয়। → দামটা খুব বেশি। বেশি is an adjective here; হয় makes it a habit, not a price.
 • আমার দুই বন্ধু আছে, কিন্তু আমার দুই ভাই আছে। → আমার দুই বন্ধু আছে, আর আমার দুই ভাই আছে। এবং/কিন্তু joins agreements, not additions; use আর for 'and also'.

Your task

Yesterday and tomorrow, in one page Write five Bengali sentences about yesterday (past verb forms) and five about tomorrow (future forms with -ব/-বে). Then read it aloud and underline every place you used a present-tense verb with a past time word — that is the habit this level breaks.

After A2: the A2+ checkpoint

A2+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between Bengali A2 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at A2+ when you can keep a conversation going, tell a short story.
