Bengali B1 — Intermediate: commands, obligation, family, opinions

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Bengali B1 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. B1 is one of the six CEFR levels and the B1 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is a young adult, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can explain a problem, write a message, follow a podcast.

 • Command politely and express have-to
 • Talk family and ages
 • Argue opinions and describe weather

Polite commands: -ুন and -বেন

The polite imperative ends in -ুন (বসুন, আসুন) or -বেন for a request about the future (আসবেন, করবেন). Bengali keeps politeness in the verb ending, so the same sentence can be a friendly nudge or a formal request.

WordSay itMeaning
বসুনboshunplease sit
আসুনashunplease come
-বেন-benpolite future/request ending
অনুরোধonurodhrequest
অনুমতিonumotipermission
Politeness lives in the ending

একটু বসুন. কাল আসবেন. The same verb with -বেন becomes a request about the future: আপনি একটু অপেক্ষা করবেন? — softer than করুণ.

verb + -un (now) · verb + -ben (later, or a request)
WordSay itMeaning
একটু অপেক্ষা করুন।ekṭu opekkha kôrun.Please wait a moment.
আপনি কাল সকালে আসবেন।apni kal shokale ashben. You will come tomorrow morning. (also a polite request)
আমি আপনার অনুমতি চাই।ami apnar onumoti chai.I ask your permission.
Watch out:
 • আপনি বসো। → আপনি বসুন। আপনি takes -ুন/-বেন; বসো belongs with তুমি.
 • দয়া করে করবেন আসুন। → দয়া করে আসুন। One politeness marker per sentence is enough.

Disagreeing without heat: আমার মনে হয়… তবে

Bengali disagreement usually starts with agreement or a softener: আমার মনে হয় (I think), ঠিক আছে কিন্তু (true, but), তবে (however), একমত নই (I don't agree). The grammar is simple; the order is the politeness.

Bengali B1 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Bengali B1 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

মাছে-ভাতে বাঙালি — 'a Bengali is fish and rice' — is a proverb that doubles as a food rule. Rice is the base of both main meals, fish is the default protein (ইলিশ in the monsoon, রুই all year), and a meal without rice is not quite a meal. Guests are offered fish head as a mark of honour, which is the sort of rule a B1 speaker should know before sitting down.

Source (named, not linked): en.wikipedia.org, the article “Bengali cuisine”.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

আমরা ঠিক করেছি যে শনিবার আমাদের বাড়িতে রান্না হবে। মা বলেছেন মাছ আর ভাত অবশ্যই লাগবে, কারণ আমাদের বাড়িতে অতিথি আসছেন। আমি ভাবছি ডাল আর সবজি আমি বানাব। যদি সময় থাকে, মিষ্টিও বানাব। তবে একটা শর্ত আছে — রান্নার পরে বাসন ধোয়া আমার কাজ নয়!

What it says: We have decided that cooking will happen at our house on Saturday. Mother said fish and rice are essential, because a guest is coming to our house. I am thinking I will make dal and vegetables. If there is time, I'll make sweets too. But there is one condition — washing the dishes after cooking is not my job!

Listening — one voice, one text

Use the speaker button to hear this text with a browser voice tagged bn-IN; playback starts only after a click. If no matching voice is installed, read it aloud yourself — the rhythm is the point.

মিতা: আপনি কি খুব ব্যস্ত?
রাতুল: একটু ব্যস্ত, কারণ কাল একটা পরীক্ষা আছে।
মিতা: তাহলে আমি পরে ফোন করি।
রাতুল: ধন্যবাদ, সন্ধ্যায় কথা বলব।

What it says: Mita: Are you very busy? Ratul: A little busy, because there is an exam tomorrow. Mita: Then I'll call later. Ratul: Thank you, we'll talk in the evening.

The 3 mistakes this level makes

 • আপনি কাল আসবে। → আপনি কাল আসবেন। আপনি takes -বেন, never -বে.
 • আমি জানি না যে সে আসবে কিনা আসবে। → আমি জানি না সে আসবে কি না। The Bengali 'whether' frame is -বে কি না, not a doubled verb.
 • আমার মনে হয় না সে আসবে। → আমার মনে হয় সে আসবে না। Negating মনে হয় says 'I do not think'; negating the inner verb says what you mean.

Your task

Explain a problem in six sentences Take a real problem — a delay, a broken plan, a missed bus. Write six Bengali sentences: what happened (past), why (কারণ), what you decided (ঠিক করেছি), and one condition (যদি). Then say it aloud in ninety seconds as if to a friend, keeping আপনি/tুমি consistent throughout.
