Bengali B2 — Advanced: conditionals, passive, debate, culture

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Bengali B2 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. B2 is one of the six CEFR levels and the B2 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is an adult, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can read a newspaper, write a real letter, joke.
An adult learning Bengali at level B2 (adult)
B2 — on the ladder this level is an adult, age 34: by the end of it the learner can read a newspaper, write a real letter, joke. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when B2 is finished

  • Use যে-clauses and hypotheticals fluently
  • Use passives and compound verbs
  • Debate and discuss Bengali culture

How sure are you? Certainty in Bengali

Bengali grades certainty with a small ladder: নিশ্চিত (certain), সম্ভবত (probably), হয়তো (perhaps), মনে হয় (it seems). In reports the impersonal frame is expected: বলা হয়েছে, মনে করা হচ্ছে.

Telling it the Bengali way: ছোট গল্পের কাঠামো

A Bengali anecdote sets the scene, turns on one small event, and closes with a saying. The frame: একদিন… (one day), তারপর… (then), হঠাৎ… (suddenly), আর শেষে… (and at the end). The saying at the close is what makes it a story rather than a report.

একদিন আমি বাজারে গিয়েছিলাম. তারপর হঠাৎ বৃষ্টি শুরু হলো. শেষে আমি ভিজে বাড়ি ফিরলাম — সত্যিই, বিনা মেঘে বজ্রপাত! One turn, one saying.

শেষে সবাই একমত হলো যে ভয়টা বাড়িয়ে বলা হয়েছিল।sheshe shobai ekmot hôlo je bhoyṭa bariye bôla hoyechhilo. In the end everyone agreed the fear had been exaggerated.
Watch out:
  • একদিন, তারপর, হঠাৎ। → (one marker per sentence) Markers are sentences' work; a chain of them is not a story.
  • শেষে আমি ভিজে ভিজে ভিজে ফিরলাম। → শেষে আমি ভিজে বাড়ি ফিরলাম। Bengali repeats a word for emphasis rarely; here it just reads as a stutter.

Bengali B2 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Bengali B2 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

Durga Puja is the largest public art event in Bengal: for four days neighbourhoods build pandals, committees commission hundreds of idols, and the city walks from one to the next. The economics matter as much as the religion — thousands of small workshops work all year — and the vocabulary of the festival (প্যান্ডেল, প্রতিমা, বিসর্জন) has entered ordinary business Bengali.

Source (named, not linked): en.wikipedia.org, the article “Durga Puja”.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

What it says: The report says that about a million people come to the city during the festival, and local traders do their highest sales of the year at this time. Critics, however, think part of the spending is only for competition, not for culture. On the other hand, organisers say every taka goes to local artisans.

The 3 mistakes this level makes

  • আমি মনে করি যে খরচ কমানো দরকার নেই। → আমি মনে করি খরচ কমানো দরকার। দরকার নেই means 'not needed'; করি যে is also heavy in Bengali prose — drop যে.
  • এটা করা হয়ে আছে। → এটা করা হয়েছে। The passive/perfect frame is করা হয়েছে.
  • প্রতিবেদনে বলে যে…। → প্রতিবেদনে বলা হয়েছে যে… Reports do not 'say' with a bare verb; the impersonal বলা হয়েছে is the register.

Your task

Rewrite one decision in three registers Take a decision from your work or society. Write it three times in Bengali: one line as a report (বলা হয়েছে যে…), one as an argument with a concession (তবে…), and one as a proposal others must approve (প্রস্তাব)। Keep to twenty words each, and keep the facts identical.

After B2: the B2+ checkpoint

B2+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between Bengali B2 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at B2+ when you can run a meeting, read a contract, disagree well. Get there by working the recall drills above and the review deck until nothing on this page surprises you.
