German A2 — Elementary: city, travel, routines, health

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole German A2 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. A2 is one of the six CEFR levels and the A2 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is a teenager, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can talk about your day, shop, order food.
A teenager learning German at level A2 (teen)
A2 — on the ladder this level is a teenager, age 13: by the end of it the learner can talk about your day, shop, order food. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when A2 is finished

 • Find your way around a German city
 • Talk about past trips with Perfekt
 • Describe routines, health, and future plans

Getting around

Around the city (Wo? vs Wohin?)

Two questions rule German places! WO? (where?) → IN DER Stadt (dative, staying). WOHIN? (where to?) → IN DIE Stadt (accusative, going). Ich bin IN DER Schule vs Ich gehe IN DIE Schule.

WordSay itMeaning
die Straßedee SHTRAH-suhstreet
der Platzdehr plahtssquare
der Bahnhofdehr BAHN-hohfstation
die Bankdee bahnkbank
das Krankenhausdahss KRAHN-ken-howshospital
das Geschäftdahss guh-SHEFTshop
linkslinksleft
rechtsrekhtsright
WO? (in der) vs WOHIN? (in die)

Staying → dative: IN DER Schule, IM Park (in+dem=im). Going → accusative: IN DIE Schule, INS Kino (in+das=ins). Movement changes the article!

wo? + in der/im · wohin? + in die/ins
WordSay itMeaning
Ich bin in der Stadt.eekh been in dehr shtaht.I am in the city. (staying)
Ich gehe in die Stadt.eekh GEH-uh in dee shtaht.I go into the city. (moving)
Er ist im Park.ehr ist im pahrk. He is in the park.
Watch out:
 • Saying IN DIE Stadt for staying — staying is IN DER (dative).
 • Forgetting IM = in+dem and INS = in+das shortcuts.

Dialogue. Read it aloud twice — once for each speaker.

Exchanging and comparing: zu groß, günstiger

Shopping problems need two tools: the comparative (GRÖSSER, BILLIGER, GÜNSTIGER) and UMTAUSCHEN. The shop answers with a condition: WENN SIE DEN KASSENZETTEL HABEN, TAUSCHEN WIR UM.

Comparing and exchanging

Diese Jacke ist günstiger als die andere. Sie ist zu klein — können wir sie umtauschen? The comparative adds -er and takes als for «than»; zu + adjective says «too».

X ist größer/günstiger als Y · können wir … umtauschen?
WordSay itMeaning

Das Hemd ist günstiger als die Jacke.das hemt ist GEWN-sti-ger als dee YAH-kuh.The shirt is cheaper than the jacket.
Können wir das umtauschen?KUR-nen veer das OOM-tow-shen?Can we exchange this?
Watch out:
 • Das ist größer wie das andere. → Das ist größer als das andere. Comparative + als; «wie» belongs to equality (so groß wie).
 • Ich will umtauschen das Hemd. → Ich möchte das Hemd umtauschen. Separable verb: the prefix goes to the end.

Dialogue. Read it aloud twice — once for each speaker.

They re-ask what the course data already contains; no answer here was written by a machine, and a generated drill is practice, never a lesson.

German A2 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for German A2 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

German eating has two speeds. The Abendbrot — bread, cheese, cold cuts, eaten at six — is not a snack but the evening meal, and it is eaten cold on purpose. The other speed is the Imbiss: currywurst, döner and fries eaten standing, in paper, at eleven at night after a concert. A2 covers ordering because the phrases are short, real and forgiving; the cultural note is that «Abendbrot» as an invitation is a home meal, never a restaurant.

Source (named, not linked): en.wikipedia.org, the article “German cuisine”.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

Um sechs Uhr gibt es Abendbrot. Auf dem Tisch stehen Brot, Käse, Wurst und Tee. Meine Mutter fragt: «Möchtest du noch ein Brot?» Ich sage: «Nein, danke, ich bin satt.» Später gehen wir zum Imbiss an der Ecke: eine Currywurst mit Pommes, vier Euro fünfzig. Der Verkäufer sagt: «Guten Appetit!»

What it says: At six o'clock there is Abendbrot. On the table stand bread, cheese, sausage and tea. My mother asks: 'Would you like another sandwich?' I say: 'No thanks, I'm full.' Later we go to the snack stand on the corner: a currywurst with fries, four euros fifty. The seller says: 'Enjoy your meal!'

Max: Was möchtest du trinken?
Lena: Einen Kaffee, bitte.
Max: Und zu essen?
Lena: Ein Brot mit Käse. — Zahlen, bitte!

What it says: Max: What would you like to drink? Lena: A coffee, please. Max: And to eat? Lena: A sandwich with cheese. — The bill, please!

The 3 mistakes this level makes

 • Ich habe Kaffee möchten. → Ich möchte einen Kaffee. möchten is the verb; put it second and the drink in the accusative.
 • Ich bin Hunger. → Ich habe Hunger. Hunger is had, not been; sein here means «I am hunger» to a German ear.
 • Zahlen bitte, ich will bezahlen die Rechnung. → Zahlen, bitte! / Ich möchte die Rechnung bezahlen. The restaurant phrase is fixed and short; the full sentence keeps the infinitive last.

Your task

Order at the Imbiss Write an eight-line Imbiss dialogue in German: greet, order food, order a drink, ask the price, pay, say goodbye. Use «ich möchte» once, «bitte» twice and no English. Then read it with a partner and change the order to two people — «zusammen oder getrennt?» — which forces the plural verb forms and is where most learners slip from du to ihr.

After A2: the A2+ checkpoint

A2+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between German A2 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at A2+ when you can keep a conversation going, tell a short story.
