German B1 — Intermediate: stories, opinions, work, plans

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole German B1 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. B1 is one of the six CEFR levels and the B1 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is a young adult, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can explain a problem, write a message, follow a podcast.
A young adult learning German at level B1 (youth)
B1 — on the ladder this level is a young adult, age 20: by the end of it the learner can explain a problem, write a message, follow a podcast. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when B1 is finished

 • Tell stories with Perfekt and Präteritum
 • Compare things and argue opinions politely
 • Handle work talk and make future plans

Stories and opinions

Stories: Perfekt vs Präteritum

Two pasts! PERFEKT = spoken past (ICH HABE GESEHEN = I saw). PRÄTERITUM = story past for a few verbs: WAR (was), HATTE (had), DACHTE (thought). Stories mix: ES WAR SONNIG, ICH HABE GEFEIERT.

die Geschichtedee guh-SHEEKH-tuhstory
die Partydee PAHR-teeparty
das Geschenkdahss guh-SHENKgift
die Überraschungdee ew-ber-RAH-shoongsurprise
Perfekt vs Präteritum: gesehen vs war

ICH HABE GESEHEN = I saw (spoken). ICH WAR = I was (story). ICH HATTE = I had. Rule: war/hatte/dachte/wollte live in Präteritum; almost everything else uses Perfekt in speech.

Perfekt (habe + GE-) · Präteritum (war/hatte/dachte)
WordSay itMeaning
Ich bin um acht Uhr angekommen.eekh been oom ahkht oor AHN-guh-koh-men.I arrived at eight. (Perfekt)
Es war sonnig.ess vahr ZON-nikh.It was sunny. (Präteritum)
Ich dachte, du kommst mit.eekh DAHKH-tuh, doo kohmst mit.I thought you come along.
Watch out:
 • Saying ES HAT SONNIG GEWESEN — weather is simply ES WAR.
 • Saying ICH HABE GEDACHT in stories — storytellers say ICH DACHTE.

Dialogue. Read it aloud twice — once for each speaker.

Recall drills — 126 more questions from the B1 words

These 126 drills are generated from the German B1 vocabulary list — the words of “Stories and opinions” through “Plans and media”, in both directions: recognition (word → meaning) and production (meaning → word). They re-ask what the course data already contains; no answer here was written by a machine, and a generated drill is practice, never a lesson.

German B1 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for German B1 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

The German route into working life runs through the Ausbildung: a two- to three-and-a-half-year apprenticeship, half at a company half at a state vocational school, ending in a chamber exam. It is not a fallback — bank clerks, nurses and IT specialists all qualify that way, and the word «Azubi» is said with no apology. B1 needs the vocabulary because work is the first place learners are asked to talk about their own plans in a register that is neither school nor home.

Source (named, not linked): en.wikipedia.org, the article “Ausbildung”.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

Lena macht eine Ausbildung als Krankenschwester. Drei Tage arbeitet sie im Krankenhaus, zwei Tage geht sie zur Berufsschule. «Am Anfang war es schwer», sagt sie. «Ich hatte Angst vor dem ersten Frühdienst.» Nach zwei Jahren sagt sie: «Die Ausbildung passt zu mir. Nächstes Jahr habe ich Prüfung, danach möchte ich auf der Intensivstation arbeiten.»

What it says: Lena is doing an apprenticeship as a nurse. Three days she works in the hospital, two days she goes to the vocational school. 'At the beginning it was hard,' she says. 'I was afraid of the first early shift.' After two years she says: 'The apprenticeship suits me. Next year I have my exam; after that I want to work in intensive care.'

Listening — one voice, one text

Use the speaker button to hear this text with a browser voice tagged de-DE; playback starts only after a click. If no matching voice is installed, read it aloud yourself — the rhythm is the point.

Chef: Was machen Sie beruflich?
Max: Ich lerne noch — ich bin im dritten Jahr
Chef: Und danach?
Max: Danach bleibe ich gern hier. Ich möchte mehr Verantwortung übernehmen.

What it says: Boss: What do you do for a living? Max: I am still training — I'm in my third year. Boss: And afterwards? Max: Afterwards I'd gladly stay here. I'd like to take on more responsibility.

The 3 mistakes this level makes

 • Ich habe 25 Jahre. → Ich bin 25 Jahre alt. Age takes sein, not haben, and the phrase needs alt.
 • Ich arbeite hier seit drei Jahre. → Ich arbeite hier seit drei Jahren. seit takes the dative plural: drei Jahren.
 • Ich will nach Hause gehen, weil ich bin müde. → …, weil ich müde bin. In a weil-clause the verb moves to the end.

Your task

Describe your working life in ninety seconds Record ninety seconds in German about what you do and what comes next: present job or study, one thing that was hard at the start, one plan for next year. Use a weil-clause with the verb last, one separable verb, and «möchte» for the plan. Listen back and count the sentences where the verb is in the wrong position — those are the ones to rewrite, not the ones to memorise.

After B1: the B1+ checkpoint

B1+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between German B1 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at B1+ when you can work in the language, argue a point politely. Get there by working the recall drills above and the review deck until nothing on this page surprises you, then open the B2 pages.
