Hindi A1 — Starter: greetings, है, first verbs

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Hindi A1 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 72 words, 307 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. A1 is one of the six CEFR levels and the A1 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is a child, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can greet, count to twenty, read a shop sign.
A child learning Hindi at level A1 (child)

What you can do when A1 is finished

  • Greet people and introduce yourself
  • Use है, यह/वह and plurals
  • Use present verbs and say 'I have'

यह क्या है? — asking about things

यह क्या है? asks what a thing is; the answer is यह + thing + है. For more than one thing the demonstrative also changes: ये चाबियाँ हैं. To ask ‘is this a …?’, क्या leads: क्या यह बोतल है? Answer हाँ + the same sentence, or नहीं + what it really is.

WordSay itMeaning
क्याkyāwhat
यहyahthis (one thing)
येyethese (more than one)
कौनkaunwho
हाँhā̃yes
नहींnahī̃no, not
बोतलbotalbottle
चाबीcābīkey
क्या यह … है? and ये … हैं

A yes/no question changes nothing but the order: क्या goes in front and the verb stays where it is. A plural answer needs बoth changes — ये instead of यह, and हैं instead of है.

क्या + यह + चीज़ + है? · ये + चीज़ें + हैं
WordSay itMeaning
क्या यह बोतल है?kyā yah botal hai?Is this a bottle?
यह बोतल नहीं, चाय है।yah botal nahī̃, cāy hai.This is not a bottle, it is tea.
ये चाबियाँ हैं।ye cābiyā̃ hain.These are keys.
Watch out:
  • Answering a bare नहीं when the real answer matters: नहीं, यह चाय है fixes the mistake instead of only refusing.
  • यह चाबियाँ हैं — the demonstrative and the verb both have to go plural: ये चाबियाँ हैं.

Dialogue. Read it aloud twice — once for each speaker.

इए — asking people to do things

A request to someone you respect ends in इए: बोलिए, बैठिए, सुनिए, आइए. With a friend the same verb ends in ओ: बोलो, बैठो, सुनो, आओ. Two verbs change shape completely — करना becomes कीजिए, and देना becomes दीजिए.

WordSay itMeaning
बोलिएbolieplease speak (respectful)
सुनिएsunieplease listen (respectful)
बैठिएbaithieplease sit (respectful)
आइएāieplease come (respectful)
कीजिएkījieplease do (respectful)
दीजिएdījieplease give (respectful)
ज़राzarājust, a little — softens a request
धीरेdhīreslowly
क्रिया-मूल + इए (आप) · + ओ (तुम)

The respectful imperative is built on the verb stem: सुन + इए = सुनिए. With तुम the ending is ओ. Adding ज़रा in front makes any request softer, and धीरे politely sets the pace.

Recall drills — 144 more questions from the A1 words

These 144 drills are generated from the Hindi A1 vocabulary list — the words of “First words” through “First verbs”, in both directions: recognition (word → meaning) and production (meaning → word). They re-ask what the course data already contains; no answer here was written by a machine, and a generated drill is practice, never a lesson.

Hindi A1 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Hindi A1 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

नमस्ते namaste is not one word but two: नमस् namas, ‘a bow’, plus ते te, ‘to you’ — literally ‘a bow to you’. That is why it works at any hour: it never names a time of day. Palms together at chest height, a small nod, and it is complete. Add जी jī to a name or a word to raise the respect: प्रकाश जी, हाँ जी, नहीं जी. On the telephone जी often means simply ‘yes, I am listening’.

Source (named, not linked): en.wikipedia.org, the article “Namaste”.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

मैं प्रकाश हूँ। यह मेरा घर है। यह मेरी बहन है। उसका नाम मीरा है। यहाँ एक कुर्सी है और एक मेज़ है। मेरे पास एक किताब है। क्या आप ठीक हैं? मैं ठीक हूँ, धन्यवाद। हम जयपुर में रहते हैं।

What it says: I am Prakash. This is my house. This is my sister. Her name is Meera. Here is a chair and a table. I have a book. Are you well? I am well, thank you. We live in Jaipur.

Listening — one voice, one text

Use the speaker button to hear this text with a browser voice tagged hi-IN; playback starts only after a click. If no matching voice is installed, read it aloud yourself — the rhythm is the point.

नमस्ते! मैं प्रकाश हूँ। यह मेरी बहन है। उसका नाम मीरा है। हम जयपुर में रहते हैं। आप कहाँ रहते हैं?

What it says: Hello! I am Prakash. This is my sister. Her name is Meera. We live in Jaipur. Where do you live?

10 idioms and fixed phrases

IdiomWord for wordWhat it means
नमस्तेa bow to youhello — at any hour, to anyone; it never names a time of day
धन्यवादthanks-givingthank you — the formal one; शुक्रिया is what people actually say
शुक्रियाthanks (borrowed from Persian)thanks — everyday, used by everybody, no register problem
कृपयाwith kindnessplease — more often written on a notice than spoken aloud
माफ़ कीजिएforgive (me)excuse me / sorry — for interrupting or squeezing past someone
कोई बात नहींno matter at allnever mind, it is fine — the standard reply to an apology
ठीक हैit is rightokay — also means ‘agreed’, and, with a flat voice, ‘that is enough’
क्या हाल है?what is the state?how are you? — friends and family, never a stranger
बहुत अच्छाvery goodvery good — and also ‘how nice!’, when someone tells you their news
चलिएlet us gocome on, let us go — the respectful form; चलो with friends your own age

The 3 mistakes this level makes

  • मैं ठीक हूँ है। → मैं ठीक हूँ। हूँ already means ‘am’. है is the third-person partner of the same verb; a sentence never carries both.
  • मेरा नाम प्रकाश हूँ। → मेरा नाम प्रकाश है। a name is not ‘I’ — it is third person, so है. हूँ is only ever for मैं.
  • आप कैसे हैं? (to a woman) → आप कैसी हैं? (to a woman) · आप कैसे हैं? (to a man) in the respectful plural the adjective still agrees with the person’s gender: कैसी for a woman, कैसे for a man.

Your task

Introduce three people, out loud Write five sentences: your name, where you live, and one thing about three different people — a friend, someone in your family, and someone older than you. Use तुम for the friend, आप for the older person, and जी on one name. Then read it aloud twice: the second time with the page face down.

After A1: the A1+ checkpoint

A1+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between Hindi A1 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at A1+ when you can ask for things, give a phone number, name the days. Get there by working the recall drills above and the review deck until nothing on this page surprises you, then open the A2 pages.
