कल — yesterday and tomorrow in one word

कल is both yesterday and tomorrow; the verb decides which one you mean. कल मैं बाज़ार गया था = yesterday I went; कल मैं बाज़ार जाऊँगा = tomorrow I will go. The same is true of परसों (the day before yesterday / the day after tomorrow), so a Hindi sentence about time is carried by its verb.

WordSay itMeaning
कलkalyesterday / tomorrow
परसोंparsõday before yesterday / day after tomorrow
आजājtoday
अभीabhīright now
पिछले हफ़्तेpichle haftelast week
अगले हफ़्तेagle haftenext week
इस सालis sālthis year
बार-बारbār-bāragain and again
Time words carry no tense — the verb does

Hindi does not mark कल as past or future. A perfective verb (गया, खाया, आया) sends it backwards; a future verb (जाऊँगा, खाऊँगा, आऊँगा) sends it forwards. Put the time word first in the sentence and the listener hears the direction from the ending.

कल + गया/गई/गया था = yesterday · कल + जाऊँगा/जाएगी = tomorrow
WordSay itMeaning
कल मैं दिल्ली गया था।kal main Dillī gayā thā.I went to Delhi yesterday.
कल मैं दिल्ली जाऊँगा।kal main Dillī jāū̃gā.I will go to Delhi tomorrow.
परसों बारिश हुई थी, और परसों फिर होगी।parsõ bāriś huī thī, aur parsõ phir hogī.It rained the day before yesterday, and it will rain again the day after tomorrow.
Watch out:
  • कल मैं बाज़ार जाऊँगा था — a future form and a past marker cannot sit together; choose one direction.
  • Putting कल at the end of the sentence: Hindi time words normally open it, and a late कल sounds like an afterthought.

Dialogue. Read it aloud twice — once for each speaker.

WhoLineSay itEnglish
राहुलकल आप बाज़ार गए थे?kal āp bāzār gae the?Did you go to the market yesterday?
मीरानहीं, कल मैं घर पर थी। बाज़ार मैं परसों गई थी।nahī̃, kal main ghar par thī. bāzār main parsõ gaī thī.No, yesterday I was at home. I went to the market the day before yesterday.

ने — the marker of who did it

When a verb is transitive and finished, the doer takes ने: मैंने चाय पी, उसने खाना बनाया. The verb then agrees with the thing acted on, not with the doer — उसने दो किताबें पढ़ीं. Intransitive verbs never take it: मैं स्कूल गया, never मैंने स्कूल गया.

WordSay itMeaning
नेnedoer marker with finished transitive verbs
मैंनेmainneI (as doer of a finished action)
उसनेusnehe/she (as doer)
हमनेhamnewe (as doers)
आपनेāpneyou (respectful, as doer)
चिट्ठीciṭṭhīletter
बनायाbanāyāmade, cooked
बुलायाbulāyācalled, invited
doer + ने + object + perfective verb

ने marks the doer only in the perfective, and only for transitive verbs. The verb drops its agreement with the doer and follows the object instead: मैंने एक किताब पढ़ी (feminine object), मैंने दो किताबें पढ़ीं (plural), मैंने पानी पिया (masculine object).

मैंने + चीज़ + पी/पढ़ी/पढ़ीं/लिखी
WordSay itMeaning
मैंने सुबह चाय पी।mainne subah cāy pī.I drank tea in the morning.
उसने दो किताबें पढ़ीं।usne do kitābẽ paṛhī̃.She read two books.
हमने उन्हें कल बुलाया।hamne unhẽ kal bulāyā.We called them yesterday.
Watch out:
  • मैंने जयपुर गया — जाना is intransitive, so there is no ने: मैं जयपुर गया।
  • मैंने किताब पढ़ा — the verb agrees with किताब, so it is पढ़ी: मैंने किताब पढ़ी।

Dialogue. Read it aloud twice — once for each speaker.

WhoLineSay itEnglish

रेस्टोरेंट में — ordering and the bill

Two verbs run a Hindi restaurant: दीजिए (please give) and लाइए (please bring). मुझे एक थाली दीजिए asks for a plate for yourself; उन्हें मेन्यू लाइए brings the menu to them. To close the meal you ask for the बिल or, more traditionally, the हिसाब.

The person who receives takes को — मुझे, हमें, उन्हें — and the request verb comes last with the respectful इए ending. देना → दीजिए (give), लाना → लाइए (bring), दिखाना → दिखाइए (show). Degree words sit before the noun: थोड़ा कम तीखा, बहुत मीठा.

They re-ask what the course data already contains; no answer here was written by a machine, and a generated drill is practice, never a lesson.

Hindi A2 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Hindi A2 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

होली Holi is a spring festival, and it is also the most useful vocabulary lesson in the calendar. The night before is होलिका दहन holikā dahan, a bonfire; the day itself is रंग rāng, colour, thrown as dry गुलाल gulāl powder or shot from a पिचकारी pichkārī, a water syringe. Strangers are fair game and the greeting is बुरा न मानो, होली है — ‘don’t take offence, it is Holi’.

Source (named, not linked): en.wikipedia.org, the article “Holi”.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

सुबह आठ बजे हैं। मैं बाज़ार जाता हूँ। बाज़ार में बहुत भीड़ है। मैं दो किलो आलू और एक किलो टमाटर खरीदता हूँ। दुकानदार कहता है, “पचास रुपये।” मैं कहता हूँ, “थोड़ा कम कर दीजिए।” वह हँसता है और कहता है, “ठीक है, पैंतालीस।” मैं घर वापस आता हूँ और चाय बनाता हूँ।

What it says: It is eight in the morning. I go to the market. The market is very crowded. I buy two kilos of potatoes and one kilo of tomatoes. The shopkeeper says, “Fifty rupees.” I say, “Make it a little less.” He laughs and says, “Fine, forty-five.” I come back home and make tea.

Listening — one voice, one text

— भैया, यह कुर्ता कितने का है?
— चार सौ रुपये, दीदी।
— चार सौ? बहुत ज़्यादा है। तीन सौ में दीजिए।
— नहीं दीदी, तीन सौ पचास का है। आप के लिए तीन सौ बीस।
— ठीक है, पैक कर दीजिए।

What it says: — Brother, how much is this kurta?
— Four hundred rupees, sister.
— Four hundred? That is too much. Give it for three hundred.
— No, sister, it costs me three hundred fifty. For you, three hundred twenty.
— Fine, pack it.

The 3 mistakes this level makes

  • मैंने किताब है। → मेरे पास किताब है। Hindi has no verb ‘to have’. Possession is the postposition पास plus होना: ‘a book is near me’.
  • मैं घर पढ़ता हूँ। → मैं घर में पढ़ता हूँ। a place needs its postposition. घर takes में inside; in a sentence like ‘I read at home’ in English the preposition comes first, in Hindi it comes after the noun.
  • पचास रुपये का है? (asking the price of many items) → पचास रुपये का है? / पचास रुपये की हैं? का-के-की agrees with the thing being priced, not with the money. One masculine item: का. A feminine or plural item: की.

Your task

One market conversation, both roles Copy the bargaining dialogue out by hand, then act both sides aloud. Change three things: the item, the first price, and the final price. Keep the phrases पैक कर दीजिए, कितने का है and थोड़ा कम कर दीजिए exactly as they are — those three carry most of the bargaining, and the numbers are the easy part.
