Hindi B1 — Intermediate: ने, commands, family, opinions

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Hindi B1 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 72 words, 307 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. B1 is one of the six CEFR levels and the B1 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is a young adult, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can explain a problem, write a message, follow a podcast.

किसने? — questions and negatives that need ने

Once a verb is transitive and finished, ने survives every change you make to the sentence: किसने बनाया? (who made it?), आपने खाना खाया या नहीं? (did you eat or not?), मैंने अभी तक किताब नहीं पढ़ी (I have not read the book yet). Question words take ने too — किसने, किस-किसने.

WordSay itMeaning
किसनेkisnewho (as the doer)
किसकोkiskowhom (to whom)
अभी तकabhī takuntil now, yet
पहलेpahlebefore, first
कभी नहींkabhī nahī̃never
साफ़sāfclean
ठीक कियाṭhīk kiyādid (it) right
यादyādmemory; to remember (याद होना/करना)
ने in questions and negatives

ने is not limited to statements. In a question the doer word simply becomes किसने; in a negative the नहीं sits between the object and the verb, and ने stays where it was: मैंने वह किताब नहीं पढ़ी. Do not drop ने just because the sentence is negative or a question.

किसने + object + verb? · doer + ने + object + नहीं + verb
WordSay itMeaning
यह खाना किसने बनाया?yah khānā kisne banāyā?Who made this food?
मैंने वह किताब अभी तक नहीं पढ़ी।mainne vah kitāb abhī tak nahī̃ paṛhī.I have not read that book yet.
आपने मुझे पहले क्यों नहीं बताया?āpne mujhe pahle kyõ nahī̃ batāyā?Why did you not tell me before?
Watch out:
  • कौन बनाया? for a thing that was made — for a transitive finished act the question word is किसने: किसने बनाया?
  • Dropping ने in the negative: मैं वह किताब नहीं पढ़ी is heard, but in careful speech it is मैंने वह किताब नहीं पढ़ी।

Dialogue. Read it aloud twice — once for each speaker.

मत कीजिए — the kind way to say ‘don’t’

मत makes a command negative, and the polite इए ending keeps it friendly: चिंता मत कीजिए, जल्दी मत कीजिए, मेरी बात मत मानिए अगर आपको ठीक न लगे. In Hindi the softening comes from the verb form and from words like ज़रा and बिल्कुल, not from tone alone.

WordSay itMeaning
मतmatdon’t (with a command)
चिंताcintāworry, anxiety
फ़िक्रfikrworry, concern
जल्दीjaldīhurry; early
बिल्कुलbilkulcompletely, at all
इतनाitnāthis much
परेशानpareśāntroubled, bothered
आरामārāmrest, comfort
मत + इए (आप) · मत + ओ (तुम)

मत goes immediately before the verb, and the verb keeps the ending its respect level demands: आप को — कीजिए / जाइए / बोलिए; तुम को — करो / जाओ / बोलो. The reassuring phrases चिंता मत कीजिए and फ़िक्र मत कीजिए are fixed and are heard all day.

चिंता मत कीजिए · ज़रा भी मत सोचिए · आराम कीजिए
WordSay itMeaning
चिंता मत कीजिए, सब ठीक हो जाएगा।cintā mat kījie, sab ṭhīk ho jāegā.Do not worry, everything will be all right.

आप मेरी बात बुरा मत मानिए।āp merī bāt burā mat mānīe.Do not take my words badly.
Watch out:
  • मत with नहीं in the same command: चिंता नहीं कीजिए is not how the phrase runs — it is चिंता मत कीजिए।
  • Forgetting the respect level: मत बोलो to an elder should be मत बोलिए।

Dialogue. Read it aloud twice — once for each speaker.

सहमति और असहमति — agreeing without a fight

Hindi disagreement is usually built on agreement first: सही कहा आपने, लेकिन… Then the objection arrives. Softer than मैं असहमत हूँ are मुझे ऐसा नहीं लगता, मेरे ख़याल से यह ठीक नहीं, और एक बात कहूँ? — may I say one thing? To agree warmly: बिल्कुल सही, मैं आपसे पूरी तरह सहमत हूँ.

असहमतasahmatin disagreement
ख़यालkhayālthought, opinion
रायrāyopinion
सही कहाsahī kahāyou said it right
एक बात कहूँ?ek bāt kahū̃?may I say one thing?
दूसरी ओरdūsrī oron the other hand
तो भीto bhīeven then, still
Agree, then turn: सही कहा, लेकिन…

A B1-level disagreement names what is right in the other view and then adds its own: सही कहा आपने, लेकिन मेरे ख़याल से यह जल्दी हो जाएगा. The connectors हालाँकि, लेकिन और दूसरी ओर do the turning, and मुझे लगता है keeps the claim personal rather than absolute.

सही कहा + लेकिन · मुझे ऐसा नहीं लगता कि · मेरे ख़याल से

सही कहा आपने, लेकिन मुझे ऐसा नहीं लगता कि यह ज़रूरी है।sahī kahā āpne, lekin mujhe aisā nahī̃ lagtā ki yah zarūrī hai.You are right, but I do not feel that it is necessary.
मेरे ख़याल से हमें एक हफ़्ते और इंतज़ार करना चाहिए।mere khayāl se hamẽ ek hafte aur intzār karnā cāhie. In my opinion we should wait another week.
दूसरी ओर यह भी सच है कि कीमत बढ़ रही है।dūsrī or yah bhī sac hai ki kīmat baṛh rahī hai.On the other hand it is also true that the price is rising.
Watch out:
  • Opening with आप ग़लत हैं — it is heard, but at B1 the polite shape is to name what is right first, then the difference.
  • मुझे लगता है as a bare fact: मुझे लगता है कि… is a personal view, so quoting it later as proof reads oddly.

Dialogue. Read it aloud twice — once for each speaker.

Hindi B1 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Hindi B1 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

देवनागरी Devanagari is a syllabic script written left to right under a continuous headline, the शिरोरेखा śirorekhā. Each consonant already contains the vowel अ a, so क is ‘ka’, not a bare ‘k’; the other vowels hang off it as matras — कि ki, की kī, कु ku, के ke, को ko. That is why a Hindi word typed in Roman letters loses information English cannot give back, and why the alphabet repays a week of drilling more than any vocabulary list does.

Source (named, not linked): en.wikipedia.org, the article “Devanagari”.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

What it says: My name is Meera and I live in Delhi. Last year I started learning Hindi, because most people in my office speak Hindi. At first I thought Hindi was difficult, but in fact the problem was only the script. When I learned to read Devanagari, everything became easier. Now I follow meetings, although I still hesitate when speaking. My colleagues say there is a big difference in six months, and I think so too.

Listening — one voice, one text

Use the speaker button to hear this text with a browser voice tagged hi-IN; playback starts only after a click. If no matching voice is installed, read it aloud yourself — the rhythm is the point.

मैं रोज़ सुबह सात बजे उठता हूँ। पहले चाय पीता हूँ, फिर आधा घंटा पढ़ता हूँ। मेरा मानना है कि भाषा वही सीखता है जो रोज़ थोड़ा-थोड़ा करता रहे। इसलिए मैंने एक छोटी कॉपी बनाई है — जो नया शब्द मिलता है, उसे लिख लेता हूँ। हफ़्ते में एक बार वे सारे शब्द दोहराता हूँ।

What it says: I get up at seven every morning. First I drink tea, then I study for half an hour. My belief is that whoever keeps doing a little every day is the one who learns a language. So I have made a small notebook — whichever new word I meet, I write it down. Once a week I revise all of them.

10 idioms and fixed phrases

The 4 mistakes this level makes

  • मैंने कल बाज़ार गया। → मैं कल बाज़ार गया। the ergative ने appears with a perfective transitive verb, but जाना ‘to go’ is intransitive — no ने.
  • मैं हिन्दी सीखता रहता हूँ (for ‘I keep learning for a while’). → मैं हिन्दी सीखता रहता हूँ (habit) · मैं हिन्दी सीख रहा हूँ (right now). two forms look like the same thing and are not: रहा है is happening now, रहता है is what you do as a rule.
  • मैं इसे पसंद करता हूँ। → मुझे यह पसंद है। ‘liking’ puts the person in the को form, not the nominative: the Hindi sentence says ‘to me, this is pleasing’.
  • आप कल आईए। → आप कल आइए। / आप कल आइएगा। the respectful imperative आइए is a fixed form; adding the future ending आइएगा is a common but different, regionally marked shape. Write आइए.

Your task

A page of your own Hindi, six weeks apart Write one page in Devanagari about why you are learning Hindi. Do not look anything up while you write; mark the words you had to think about with a pencil dot. Keep the page. In six weeks write the same page again without looking at the first one. The dot count is your real progress report — not the number of lessons finished.

After B1: the B1+ checkpoint

B1+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between Hindi B1 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at B1+ when you can work in the language, argue a point politely.
