Italian B2 — Upper intermediate: debate, work, culture

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Italian B2 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. B2 is one of the six CEFR levels and the B2 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is an adult, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can read a newspaper, write a real letter, joke.
An adult learning Italian at level B2 (adult)
B2 — on the ladder this level is an adult, age 34: by the end of it the learner can read a newspaper, write a real letter, joke. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when B2 is finished

 • Argue opinions with the congiuntivo mood
 • Write formal emails and master combined prepositions
 • Understand idioms and build rich hypothetical stories

Leggere le notizie: dal titolo al rapporto

A headline and a report say the same thing in two grammars: «Disoccupazione in calo» piles nouns, while «il tasso di disoccupazione è sceso del 2%» builds a sentence with a verb and a figure.

They re-ask what the course data already contains; no answer here was written by a machine, and a generated drill is practice, never a lesson.

Italian B2 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Italian B2 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

Italian argument likes the counter-move: a claim is granted with «è vero che», then turned with «però», «d'altra parte» or «tuttavia». A debate can sound heated and end with a coffee, because conceding the true part first is what makes the objection listenable.

Source (named, not linked): en.wikipedia.org, the article “Italian culture”.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

«È vero che la misura ha ridotto i costi», dice la sindacalista. «Tuttavia ha aumentato il carico di lavoro, e nessuno ha misurato questo effetto.» Il direttore risponde che i dati sono provvisori. D'altra parte accetta una valutazione indipendente a settembre: due posizioni, un accordo parziale e una data per verificare.

What it says: 'It is true that the measure reduced costs,' says the union representative. 'However, it increased the workload, and nobody has measured that effect.' The director replies that the figures are provisional. On the other hand he accepts an independent evaluation in September: two positions, a partial agreement and a date to check it.

Listening — one voice, one text

Use the speaker button to hear this text with a browser voice tagged it-IT; playback starts only after a click. If no matching voice is installed, read it aloud yourself — the rhythm is the point.

Marco: È vero che costa molto.
Sofia: Tuttavia non possiamo aspettare un altro anno.
Marco: D'accordo sul principio. Però serve un calendario.
Sofia: Un controllo al mese, ti va?

What it says: Marco: It is true that it costs a lot. Sofia: However, we cannot wait another year. Marco: Agreed in principle. But we need a timetable. Sofia: One check a month, does that suit you?

The 3 mistakes this level makes

 • Tuttavia però serve un calendario. → Tuttavia serve un calendario. One contrast marker per sentence.
 • Non sono d'accordo per niente ma ti rispetto. → Non sono d'accordo, anche se rispetto la tua posizione. State the limit of the disagreement; empty courtesy sounds dismissive.
 • È vero che costa molto, quindi lasciamo perdere. → È vero che costa molto; d'altra parte, aspettare costa di più. Concede to keep the argument, not to abandon it.

Your task

Disagree in writing, twice Write a six-line Italian note about a decision you find partly wrong: concede with è vero che …, turn with tuttavia / d'altra parte, offer a counter-measure, and close with one point of agreement and a date. Then rewrite the same note with every concession removed and compare which version a real reader would act on.

After B2: the B2+ checkpoint

B2+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between Italian B2 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at B2+ when you can run a meeting, read a contract, disagree well. Get there by working the recall drills above and the review deck until nothing on this page surprises you.
