Portuguese A1 — Beginner: first words, family, food

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Portuguese A1 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 65 words, 293 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. A1 is one of the six CEFR levels and the A1 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is a child, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can greet, count to twenty, read a shop sign.
A child learning Portuguese at level A1 (child)
A1 — on the ladder this level is a child, age 7: by the end of it the learner can greet, count to twenty, read a shop sign. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when A1 is finished

  • Greet people and introduce yourself in Portuguese
  • Count, tell age, and talk about family
  • Order food and use basic present-tense verbs

A1, unit by unit

O alfabeto, os acentos e o seu nome

Portuguese writes almost what it says, and the exceptions are the accents. The til makes a vowel nasal (ã, õ), the cedilla keeps a c soft (ç), the acute marks the stressed vowel (é, á) and the circumflex marks a closed one (ê, ô). When someone asks como se escreve?, they want letters, not sounds — double l, c with cedilla, no accent.

Asking and giving a spelling

Como se escreve? asks how a word is written, and the answer is given letter by letter or by naming the change: com acento, sem acento, com dois l, com ç. The customer-service form é escrito com… is also ordinary. Names keep their own spelling, so ask instead of guessing.

A casa: moro em, tem, fica

Three verbs describe a home and only one of them is about you. Eu moro em… puts you there, o apartamento tem… describes what is inside, and o prédio fica… places the building in the street. The same three do the work for a job or a school: trabalho em, a empresa tem, fica no centro.

O tempo, as estações e o que fazer no fim de semana

Weather is said two ways and both are correct: está quente (it is hot, with an adjective) and faz calor (it is hot, with a noun). Choose by what follows — faz calor pairs with nouns (calor, frio, sol, vento) and está pairs with adjectives (quente, frio, nublado). Chover and nevar are impersonal: chove muito em janeiro.

Talking about the weather

Use está + adjective for a moment (hoje está frio), and faz + noun for what the day is like (faz frio no inverno). Verbs of weather have no subject: chove, neva, venta. The seasons in Brazil run the other way round from Europe: o verão is December to March, and o inverno is short in the North and real in the South.

Portuguese A1 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Portuguese A1 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

Portuguese is the official language of Brazil and of seven other countries, and Brazil alone has more speakers than all the others together — which is why this course teaches the Brazilian variety. Three sounds do most of the work: the nasal vowels written with a til (pão, irmã, não), nh (like the ny in canyon: manhã) and lh (like the lli in million: filho). The everyday word for you is você, and it takes the same verb form as ele, which is why beginners hear fala where Spanish would say hablas.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

Meu nome é Marina e eu moro em Belo Horizonte. Eu tenho vinte e seis anos e trabalho numa padaria perto de casa. De manhã eu tomo café com leite e como pão com manteiga. Minha família é grande: meus pais moram no interior, e minha irmã mora comigo. À noite eu estudo português porque quero escrever melhor. No domingo nós almoçamos juntos e depois caminhamos no parque.

What it says: My name is Marina and I live in Belo Horizonte. I am twenty-six years old and I work in a bakery near my house. In the morning I drink coffee with milk and eat bread with butter. My family is big: my parents live in the countryside, and my sister lives with me. At night I study Portuguese because I want to write better. On Sunday we have lunch together and then walk in the park.

Listening — one voice, one text

Use the speaker button to hear this text with a browser voice tagged pt-BR; playback starts only after a click. If no matching voice is installed, read it aloud yourself — the rhythm is the point.

Bom dia! Você é a Marina? — Sou, sim. E você? — Eu sou o Paulo, da padaria. Tudo bem? — Tudo bem, obrigada. Você trabalha aqui? — Trabalho, sim. Comecei na semana passada.

What it says: Good morning! Are you Marina? — Yes, I am. And you? — I'm Paulo, from the bakery. How are you? — All good, thank you. Do you work here? — I do, yes. I started last week.

The 3 mistakes this level makes

  • Eu sou vinte anos. → Eu tenho vinte anos. Age uses ter (to have), never ser.
  • Eu estou bom hoje. → Eu estou bem hoje. bem is the adverb of how you are; bom is an adjective for a thing or a person.
  • Obrigado! (said by a woman) → Obrigada! (said by a woman) The word agrees with the speaker: a man says obrigado, a woman obrigada.

Your task

Apresente-se em voz alta Record ninety seconds: name, city, age, work or study, and one thing you do every day. Then write the same five sentences by hand. Check three things before you finish: tenho for your age, bem after estou, and obrigado/obrigada agreeing with you.

After A1: the A1+ checkpoint

A1+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between Portuguese A1 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at A1+ when you can ask for things, give a phone number, name the days.
