Portuguese B2 — Advanced: fluency, debate, culture

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Portuguese B2 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 64 words, 291 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. B2 is one of the six CEFR levels and the B2 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is an adult, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can read a newspaper, write a real letter, joke.
An adult learning Portuguese at level B2 (adult)
B2 — on the ladder this level is an adult, age 34: by the end of it the learner can read a newspaper, write a real letter, joke. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when B2 is finished

  • Use advanced pasts and the conditional naturally
  • Argue opinions with subjunctive and connectors
  • Discuss Brazilian culture with real fluency

Hipóteses no passado: se tivesse…

An unreal past condition has two halves that must agree: se + imperfect subjunctive (tivesse, fosse, pudesse) and the conditional with teria + participle (teria feito, teria sido). Swap either half and the sentence stops being an unreal condition — it becomes a promise about the future or a plain statement of fact.

WordSay itMeaning

Unreal past conditions

Se + imperfeito do subjuntivo states the unreal past; the other half takes teria + participle. Caso is the formal variant and also takes the subjunctive (caso tivesse). The order can be reversed with no change of meaning, and a comma marks the swap.

Argumentar por escrito: conectores formais

Written argument in Portuguese moves by connectives that carry a claim about the relation between ideas: portanto concludes, contudo contrasts, na medida em que explains by degree, dado que supplies a premise. A paragraph with four connectives of the same type reads as a list; a paragraph that varies them reads as an argument.

Cinema e crítica cultural

A cultural review is an argument with a stated scope. The frame o que me interessa é names what the critic is reading for; peca por + infinitive names the defect without insult; the concession embora reconheça keeps the positive in view. A review that only approves or only condemns has not yet said what it is looking at.

The frame o que me interessa é + noun clause shifts the review to what the critic actually read. Peca por + infinitive names a fault precisely: peca por explicar demais. Embora + subjunctive concedes the other side without abandoning the thesis.

Portuguese B2 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Portuguese B2 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

Brazilian culture makes its arguments in public: samba was born in the houses of Bahia and grew in the morros of Rio; bossa nova took the same rhythm into a small room and a quiet voice; the MPB of the 1960s and 1970s turned song into political speech, and some of it was written in exile. Literature runs from Machado de Assis, who dissected a society by refusing to flatter it, to Clarice Lispector, who dissected a sentence, and to the cordel leaflets of the Northeast, printed and sold at fairs and still read aloud. To criticise here is not to be against Brazil — it is the local form of taking part.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

What it says: The samba circle started at nine, when the bar owner pushed the tables out onto the pavement. Nobody announced anything: the cavaquinho played two chords and everyone already knew the entry. There was a man of about eighty singing with a hat on his lap and a twelve-year-old girl repeating the chorus without looking at the guitar. Between one song and the next, someone said the group had played there since 1998, and that the city government had wanted to close the street last year. The samba went on, quieter and then louder, until the owner brought water for the musicians and the circle turned into a conversation.

Você leu a crítica de ontem? — Li, mas discordo do título. — Por quê? — Porque o filme não é sobre a seca; a seca é o cenário. O que me interessa é a relação entre o pai e a filha, e isso a crítica nem menciona.

What it says: Did you read yesterday's review? — I did, but I disagree with the headline. — Why? — Because the film is not about the drought; the drought is the setting. What interests me is the relationship between the father and the daughter, and the review does not even mention it.

The 3 mistakes this level makes

  • Se eu seria rico, eu viajaria. → Se eu fosse rico, eu viajaria. An unreal condition takes the imperfect subjunctive: fosse.
  • Espero que ela está bem. → Espero que ela esteja bem. Espero que triggers the present subjunctive.
  • Prefiro que você vai sozinho. → Prefiro que você vá sozinho. Preferir que also takes the subjunctive.

Your task

Uma crítica curta com uma tese Choose a Brazilian song, film or book you know. Write 150 to 200 words with one sentence that states your thesis, two paragraphs that support it from the work itself (quote a line, a scene, a verse), and one concession starting with embora or ainda que. Finish with a sentence that states what your reading does not claim.

After B2: the B2+ checkpoint

B2+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between Portuguese B2 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at B2+ when you can run a meeting, read a contract, disagree well. Get there by working the recall drills above and the review deck until nothing on this page surprises you.
