Portuguese A2 — Elementary: city, travel, routines, health

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Portuguese A2 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. A2 is one of the six CEFR levels and the A2 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is a teenager, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can talk about your day, shop, order food.
A teenager learning Portuguese at level A2 (teen)
A2 — on the ladder this level is a teenager, age 13: by the end of it the learner can talk about your day, shop, order food. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when A2 is finished

  • Find your way around a Brazilian city
  • Talk about past trips with pretérito perfeito
  • Describe routines, health, and future plans

Direções: a pé, de ônibus, de metrô

Brazilian directions are given in the imperative you (vira, desce, pega), which is the same form as the third person singular: ele vira, você vira. Distance is counted in quadras (blocks) and walking time, and the destination is placed with fica: fica a duas quadras daqui.

Pesos, medidas e troco

At a Brazilian counter the request is me vê: me vê meio quilo de tomate. Quantity comes before the item, and the price is asked with quanto deu? or quanto é?. The troco is what comes back, and o troco está certo says it without counting in public. Decimals are said with e: nove e cinquenta.

Portuguese A2 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Portuguese A2 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

Brazilian daily life runs through small shared places: the padaria at the corner, where people buy pão francês by weight (trezentos gramas, por favor) and drink a cafezinho standing at the counter; the feira on a fixed weekday, with hortifruti, pastel and caldo de cana; and the ônibus or metrô that decides how far a job can be. Prices are in reais, and the plural is regular — um real, dois reais. Food vocabulary is a survival kit rather than a menu: arroz e feijão is the plate under everything, and marmita is the box people carry to work.

Source (named, not linked): en.wikipedia.org, the article “Culture of Brazil”.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

No sábado eu acordei cedo e fui à feira com a minha vizinha. Compramos banana, tomate e um quilo de laranja. Ela pediu trezentos gramas de queijo e pagou com dinheiro; eu paguei com o cartão porque não tinha troco. Depois tomamos caldo de cana em pé, perto da barraca do pastel. Voltamos a pé porque a feira fica a duas quadras da nossa rua, e chegamos em casa antes do meio-dia.

What it says: On Saturday I woke up early and went to the street market with my neighbour. We bought bananas, tomatoes and a kilo of oranges. She asked for three hundred grams of cheese and paid in cash; I paid by card because I had no change. Afterwards we drank sugar-cane juice standing up, near the pastel stall. We walked back because the market is two blocks from our street, and we got home before noon.

Boa tarde, tem pão francês? — Tem, sim. Quantos? — Quatro, por favor. E um café com leite. — Para levar? — Não, para tomar aqui. Quanto é? — Nove reais e cinquenta. — Aceita cartão? — Aceita, sim.

What it says: Good afternoon, do you have French bread? — Yes, we do. How many? — Four, please. And a coffee with milk. — To take away? — No, to drink here. How much is it? — Nine reais and fifty. — Do you take card? — Yes, we do.

The 3 mistakes this level makes

  • Ontem eu vou à feira. → Ontem eu fui à feira. A finished time needs the past: fui.
  • Ele gosta de ler e eu gosto também de ler livros. → Ele gosta de ler e eu também gosto de ler livros. The adverb também sits before the verb it shares.
  • Eu pagui com dinheiro. → Eu paguei com dinheiro. pagar keeps the gu in the first person: paguei.

Your task

Lista da feira e um diálogo Write a market list of eight items with quantities in Portuguese (quilo, gramas, dúzia), then write the six-line dialogue you would have at the counter: ask for two items, ask the price, ask whether they take card, and say thank you. Read it out loud once without looking.
