Your first language decides which parts of Hindi are easy and which are slow, and almost no course takes account of it. This page does. It is written for someone who already speaks Italian and wants to know what that is worth before spending a year finding out.
Subject-verb-object, so Hindi's verb-final order is new. Italian's tolerance for moving elements around for emphasis is mild preparation and nothing more.
Pronunciation, and more of it than any other European language. Italian's seven vowels are clean and unreduced, which is exactly what Hindi needs. The rolled or tapped r transfers straight to र. Italian dental t and d are essentially Hindi's त and द, the sounds English speakers spend months failing to produce. Double consonants are already meaningful to you, which helps with Hindi's geminates. Add grammatical gender and verbs that agree with the subject, and Italian speakers routinely sound better in Hindi after three months than English speakers do after a year.
Aspiration, absent from Italian entirely: क and ख are one sound to an untrained Italian ear, as are प and फ. And the Devanagari script, which is new but phonetic and regular in a way Italian speakers will find reasonable. Italian's strong preference for words ending in vowels also needs watching — Hindi words end in consonants constantly and adding a vowel changes them.
| What | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Aspiration | Five pairs, all new. Hold a sheet of paper in front of your mouth: it should move for the second of each pair. |
| Retroflex ट ठ ड ढ | No Italian equivalent. The tongue curls back towards the roof of the mouth. |
| Do not add a final vowel | दोस्त is dost, not doste. This is the most Italian-specific habit to break. |
| Vowels — your advantage | Already correct. Tell a tutor so the lesson time goes somewhere useful. |
| Feature | How it compares |
|---|---|
| Gender, already instinctive | Il libro, la tavola. Hindi does the same and additionally agrees the verb. |
| Postpositions instead of prepositions | Italian alla casa; Hindi घर को, house-to. Familiar concept, reversed position. |
| One verb for essere and stare | Hindi's होना covers both. Italian speakers expect a distinction and are relieved to find none. |
| The ने construction | No Italian analogue at all. Budget real time — it is the piece that catches every Romance speaker. |
Looks like: the bus. In practice: it is also the bus — but far more often it means 'enough' or 'that's it', used constantly as a standalone word at a dinner table.
Notice that the order is not the order a general course would use. That is the whole point of organising this by your first language: the sequence that works depends on what you already have.
Devanagari is easy to get slightly wrong when it is typed by hand — a missing matra, the wrong nukta. If something here looks off to you, trust a native speaker over this page and please tell us so it gets fixed — it takes a moment and a real person reads it. Romanised spellings are a guide to the sound, not a standard: there is no single official way to write Hindi in Latin letters.

Not to speak. Many learners work in romanised Hindi for months. If you want to read signs, messages or anything written, the script is phonetic and consistent, and most learners read simple words within a few weeks.
Nobody can give you an honest number, because it depends on hours per week far more than on your first language. What this page can tell you is which parts will be quick for you and which will be slow, which is more useful than a figure.
Everything above can be read. The sound work in particular cannot be self-assessed — you cannot hear your own errors, which is precisely why they fossilise. A tutor is the only mechanism that fixes that, and an hour a week is enough.
