Hindi mistakes Italian speakers make

Not general beginner errors — the ones that come specifically from having Italian as a first language, which means they are predictable, and therefore preventable.

Why these are worth naming

Most learner errors correct themselves with exposure. A small number do not: they become automatic before you notice, and unlearning an automatic habit takes far longer than learning it correctly once. Those are the ones below.

The reason they fossilise is simple and uncomfortable: you cannot hear your own errors. That is what an error is. Six months of solo practice does not produce six months of progress — it produces one wrong habit, now permanent.

Sound mistakes

The mistakeWhy it happens and what it costs
AspirationFive pairs, all new. Hold a sheet of paper in front of your mouth: it should move for the second of each pair.
Retroflex ट ठ ड ढNo Italian equivalent. The tongue curls back towards the roof of the mouth.
Do not add a final vowelदोस्त is dost, not doste. This is the most Italian-specific habit to break.
Vowels — your advantageAlready correct. Tell a tutor so the lesson time goes somewhere useful.

Grammar mistakes

The areaWhat goes wrong
Gender, already instinctiveIl libro, la tavola. Hindi does the same and additionally agrees the verb.
Postpositions instead of prepositionsItalian alla casa; Hindi घर को, house-to. Familiar concept, reversed position.
One verb for essere and stareHindi's होना covers both. Italian speakers expect a distinction and are relieved to find none.
The ने constructionNo Italian analogue at all. Budget real time — it is the piece that catches every Romance speaker.

Four mistakes every learner makes, regardless of language

Postponing gender

Learning nouns without their gender means every adjective and every verb is a coin flip. Retrofitting gender onto a thousand words later takes roughly ten times as long as learning it with them.

Using ने with intransitive verbs

मैंने गया is wrong; it is मैं गया. Only transitive, only perfective.

Saying मैं पसंद करता हूँ for "I like"

The correct structure makes the thing the subject: मुझे पसंद है — to me it is pleasing. Hindi does this with a whole family of experiences: hunger, thirst, liking, knowing.

Copying तू from films

Film dialogue is written for characters who already know each other. तू with a stranger, a waiter or anyone senior is a real insult, where a wrong verb ending is merely a wrong verb ending. Default to आप.

How to catch these on your own, as far as you can

  1. Record sixty seconds and listen back tomorrow. You will hear things that were completely inaudible while you were producing them.
  2. Drill in minimal pairs. Two real words differing in one sound removes every other cue and forces the distinction.
  3. Write, then say. Compose five sentences, then produce them without looking. Errors show up in production that never show up in recognition.

All three help. None of them replaces a person telling you that the word you just said was a different word, which is the only mechanism that reliably works.

A note on the Hindi spellings

Devanagari is easy to get slightly wrong when it is typed by hand — a missing matra, the wrong nukta. If something here looks off to you, trust a native speaker over this page and please tell us so it gets fixed — it takes a moment and a real person reads it. Romanised spellings are a guide to the sound, not a standard: there is no single official way to write Hindi in Latin letters.

Questions

What mistake do Italian speakers make most?

Aspiration — Five pairs, all new. Hold a sheet of paper in front of your mouth: it should move for the second of each pair.

Will Hindi speakers mind if I make mistakes?

Almost universally no. The common experience of attempting Hindi in India is warmth, not correction. The bigger risk is being answered in English out of helpfulness — say मैं हिंदी सीख रहा हूँ, हिंदी में बोलिए and it usually works.

Which mistakes actually matter?

The ones that change a word into a different word, and register errors. A wrong verb ending is a wrong verb ending; using तू with a stranger is genuinely rude. The second is the one worth worrying about.

Fossilised errors are the expensive kind

Every mistake on this page is cheap to fix in week two and expensive in year two. One hour a week with someone who will correct you is the difference, and it is a point about physics rather than a sales pitch — you cannot hear yourself.
