Not general beginner errors — the ones that come specifically from having Spanish as a first language, which means they are predictable, and therefore preventable.
Most learner errors correct themselves with exposure. A small number do not: they become automatic before you notice, and unlearning an automatic habit takes far longer than learning it correctly once. Those are the ones below.
The reason they fossilise is simple and uncomfortable: you cannot hear your own errors. That is what an error is. Six months of solo practice does not produce six months of progress — it produces one wrong habit, now permanent.
| The mistake | Why it happens and what it costs |
|---|---|
| Aspirated pairs | The whole क/ख series. Spanish never puffs air after a stop, so this is a new physical habit, not a new sound. |
| Retroflex consonants | ट ठ ड ढ do not exist in Spanish. The tongue curls back. Expect a few weeks. |
| Vowel length | Hindi distinguishes short इ from long ई, and it changes meaning. Spanish vowel length is not contrastive, so this must be learned as new information rather than transferred. |
| The area | What goes wrong |
|---|---|
| Gender you already understand | La mesa, el libro — you have spent your life doing this. Hindi does the same, with the twist that the verb agrees too. |
| Postpositions instead of prepositions | Spanish a la casa; Hindi घर को, house-to. The concept is familiar, the position is reversed. |
| No ser/estar problem | Hindi has one verb होना for both. Spanish speakers routinely expect a distinction and find, happily, that there is not one. |
| Ergativity in the past | Hindi marks the subject of a completed transitive verb with ने, and the verb then agrees with the object instead. Nothing in Spanish prepares you for it, and it is the one grammar point Spanish speakers should budget real time for. |
Learning nouns without their gender means every adjective and every verb is a coin flip. Retrofitting gender onto a thousand words later takes roughly ten times as long as learning it with them.
मैंने गया is wrong; it is मैं गया. Only transitive, only perfective.
The correct structure makes the thing the subject: मुझे पसंद है — to me it is pleasing. Hindi does this with a whole family of experiences: hunger, thirst, liking, knowing.
Film dialogue is written for characters who already know each other. तू with a stranger, a waiter or anyone senior is a real insult, where a wrong verb ending is merely a wrong verb ending. Default to आप.
All three help. None of them replaces a person telling you that the word you just said was a different word, which is the only mechanism that reliably works.
Devanagari is easy to get slightly wrong when it is typed by hand — a missing matra, the wrong nukta. If something here looks off to you, trust a native speaker over this page and please tell us so it gets fixed — it takes a moment and a real person reads it. Romanised spellings are a guide to the sound, not a standard: there is no single official way to write Hindi in Latin letters.
Aspirated pairs — The whole क/ख series. Spanish never puffs air after a stop, so this is a new physical habit, not a new sound.
Almost universally no. The common experience of attempting Hindi in India is warmth, not correction. The bigger risk is being answered in English out of helpfulness — say मैं हिंदी सीख रहा हूँ, हिंदी में बोलिए and it usually works.
The ones that change a word into a different word, and register errors. A wrong verb ending is a wrong verb ending; using तू with a stranger is genuinely rude. The second is the one worth worrying about.
Every mistake on this page is cheap to fix in week two and expensive in year two. One hour a week with someone who will correct you is the difference, and it is a point about physics rather than a sales pitch — you cannot hear yourself.
