Marathi sentence structure

Track subject, object, and verb through a Marathi example, then notice how postpositions show the links between them.

Simple sentences stack three blocks: मी शाळेत जातो (I — to-school — go), ती गाणं गाते (she — song — sings), आम्ही मराठी शिकतो (we — Marathi — study). Subject, object, verb — build a hundred of these and Marathi skeleton is yours.

Animals make perfect practice: मुलगा हसतो (the boy laughs), कुत्रा भुंकतो (the dog barks), मांजर झोपतं (the cat sleeps). Short subjects, vivid verbs, zero ambiguity — describe every creature you meet and SOV becomes reflex.

Time flexes the frame: मी उद्या येईन (I'll come tomorrow), काल पाऊस पडला (it rained yesterday). Time words float — front for emphasis, middle for flow — while the verb holds the end. Tense plus time word: past, present, future, mastered.

Identity and questions close the set: हे माझं घर आहे (this is my house), हे तुझं पुस्तक आहे का? (is this your book?), सगळं ठीक आहे (all is well). Equate with हे/ते, question with का, reassure with सगळं ठीक आहे — sentences for every situation.

Language, culture, and common traps

A note on पाऊस पडतोय. Marathi weather does things: पाऊस पडतोय (rain is falling), ऊन पडलंय (sun is out), वारा सुटलाय (wind is blowing). No empty it — Marathi skies act. Weather sentences teach SOV with zero confusion: subject, then verb, done.

Practice: recall, then use

Use this quick recall drill for Marathi sentence structure. Hide the script and romanisation columns; say the Marathi form for each cue before revealing its row, then check spelling and sound. The phrase-table speaker buttons provide a model when a matching browser voice is available.

  1. I go to school
  2. The dog barks
  3. All is well

Context check. For Marathi sentence structure, “All is well” belongs to a particular setting. A common mistake is to treat an English gloss as universal; read the language-specific note above and ask a fluent speaker when local usage differs.

Check your recall: answer key
  1. मी शाळेत जातो mi shaalet jaato — I go to school
  2. कुत्रा भुंकतो kutraa bhunkato — The dog barks
  3. सगळं ठीक आहे sagalan theek aahe — All is well

Questions learners ask

What is Marathi word order?

Subject-Object-Verb: मी पुस्तक वाचतो (I book read). Endings mark roles, so order flexes for emphasis — but verb-last is home.

How do tenses work?

Tense lives on the verb, with gender: वाचतो/वाचते (read-present), वाचलं (read-past), वाचीन (will read). Time words — काल, आज, उद्या — frame it; the verb carries it.

How do I ask questions?

Add का and rise: हे तुझं पुस्तक आहे का? (is this your book?). Question words — काय, कुठे, कोण — sit where the answer would.
