Marathi alphabet
Devanagari plus ळ — vowels, consonants and barakhadi, made friendly.
🔊 Tap any speaker button to hear Marathi spoken. Too fast or slow? Use the speed button at the bottom-right of the page.
Vowels anchor everything: अ आ इ ई उ ऊ ए ऐ ओ औ अं अः — thirteen pure sounds. Long-short pairs matter — इ vs ई changes meaning. Chant them in order daily; the mouth memorises what the ear repeats.
Consonants march in families: क ख ग घ (throat), च छ ज झ (palate), ट ठ ड ढ (roof), त थ द ध (teeth), प फ ब भ (lips). Family by family, feel where each sound lives — Marathi pronunciation is geography you can touch.
Special letters crown the set: य र ल व श ष स ह ळ क्ष ज्ञ — with ळ (retroflex L) and ज्ञ as Marathi treasures. शाळा (school) shows ळ in action; ज्ञान (knowledge) shows ज्ञ. Special letters, everyday words.
Barakhadi grids it all: क का कि की कु कू के कै को कौ कं कः — each consonant through every vowel. One grid mastered teaches all grids. Read barakhadi aloud for a month; Devanagari becomes a friend for life.

- Letter a (short)
- Letter e
- Barakhadi (vowel grid)
Transfer practice. Pick one letter or sign from the examples, trace it slowly, and name its sound before you read a whole word containing it. Then cover the chart and identify the same shape in a new example. This separates visual recognition from pronunciation and helps prevent guessing from a familiar-looking script. Start from अ (a) and decide whether it fits the situation before using it elsewhere.
Context check. For Marathi alphabet, “Barakhadi (vowel grid)” belongs to a particular setting. A common mistake is to treat an English gloss as universal; read the language-specific note above and ask a fluent speaker when local usage differs.
