Mistakes every learner makes in Marathi

Verb-first sentences, मी हवं, नाही vs नको — fix them all.

🔊 Tap any speaker button to hear Marathi spoken. Too fast or slow? Use the speed button at the bottom-right of the page.

Mistake one: English word order. मी जा (I go — bare stem, wrong) instead of मी जातो (I go — conjugated, right); verbs wandering mid-sentence instead of anchoring the end. Marathi is verb-final, always — SOV is not a suggestion, it is the law.

Mistake two: मी हवं (I want — wrong) instead of मला हवं आहे (to-me wanted — right). Marathi wanting flows toward the wanter; English wanting fires from the wanter. Flip the arrow and dozens of sentences — मला समजलं, मला माहीत आहे — unlock at once.

Mistake three: one-size no. नाही denies facts — पैसे नाहीत (there's no money); नको refuses offers — चहा नको (no tea for me). Beginners spray नाही everywhere; natives smile and correct. Learn both no's, use each precisely.

Mistake four: rushing sounds — flat long vowels, skipped ळ, wrong gender endings. हळू (slowly), बरोबर (correctly), पुन्हा (again): the holy trinity of repair. प्रयत्न (effort) plus सराव (practice) plus संयम (patience) — and अभिनंदन, mistakes become fluency.

Language, culture, and common traps

A note on चूक. चूक (chook — mistake) is the kindest word in this lesson — माझी चूक (my mistake) disarms every situation. Marathis adore learners who err boldly and laugh warmly; the only true चूक is silence.

Questions learners ask

What is the most common mistake?

English order with Marathi words: मी जा instead of मी जातो, verb first, question words misplaced. Cure: every sentence ends with the verb — practise SOV until English order feels foreign.

Why is मी हवं wrong?

Wanting flows toward people: मला हवं आहे (to-me it-is-wanted), never मी हवं. One of Marathi's deepest patterns — experiences come TO you — and beginners fight it for weeks.

नाही or नको?

नाही denies facts — पैसे नाहीत (there's no money); नको refuses — नको, धन्यवाद (no thanks, I don't want it). Two no's, two jobs, zero overlap.
