Arabic A2 — Elementary: past, future, descriptions, food

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Arabic A2 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 64 words, 291 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. A2 is one of the six CEFR levels and the A2 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is a teenager, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can talk about your day, shop, order food.
A teenager learning Arabic at level A2 (teen)
A2 — on the ladder this level is a teenager, age 13: by the end of it the learner can talk about your day, shop, order food. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when A2 is finished

 • Talk about past and future with correct endings
 • Describe things with ال and matching adjectives
 • Shop, order food and ask prices

Pinning time: أمس، الآن، غداً

Arabic often lets the time word carry what English does with tense: أمس with a perfect verb, غداً with سـ, الآن with the present. Put the time word first and it frames everything after it.

WordSay itMeaning
أمسamsyesterday
غداًghadantomorrow
الآنal-ānnow
دائماًdāʾimanalways
بعد قليلbaʿda qalīlin a little while
Time word + tense

غداً سأدرس (tomorrow I will study). أمس درستُ (yesterday I studied). الآن أدرس (now I am studying). The time word does not change the verb — but it must agree with it.

time word first + verb in the matching form
WordSay itMeaning
غداً سأسافر إلى دبي.ghadan sa-usāfir ilā Dubayy.Tomorrow I will travel to Dubai.
الآن ندرس العربية.al-ān nadrus al-ʿarabiyya.Now we are studying Arabic.
دائماً نشرب القهوة صباحاً.dāʾiman nashrab al-qahwa ṣabāḥan.We always drink coffee in the morning.
Watch out:
 • غداً درستُ الدرس. → غداً سأدرس الدرس. غداً cannot sit with a past verb.
 • دائماً أشرب القهوة أمس. → أمس شربتُ القهوة. A frequency word and a one-time past word contradict each other.

Dialogue. Read it aloud twice — once for each speaker.

Recall drills — 128 more questions from the A2 words

These 128 drills are generated from the Arabic A2 vocabulary list — the words of “Past and future” through “Food and shopping”, in both directions: recognition (word → meaning) and production (meaning → word). They re-ask what the course data already contains; no answer here was written by a machine, and a generated drill is practice, never a lesson.

Arabic A2 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Arabic A2 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

The Arabic past tense is not only 'past': with قد and the perfect form it also reports news the listener has not heard yet, which is why the same sentence can mean 'he wrote' and 'he has written'. Learners who translate word-for-word miss that the verb form is doing the work of an English tense-and-aspect pair, and Arabic instead leans on time words — أمس، الآن، غداً — to place the action.

Source (named, not linked): en.wikipedia.org, the article “Arabic verbs”.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

أمس ذهبتُ إلى السوق مع أخي. اشتريتُ خبزاً وفاكهة، ثمّ شربنا القهوة في مقهى صغير. قال لي: «سأسافر غداً إلى بيروت». سألتُ: «لماذا؟» فأجاب: «لأنّ عملي هناك». في المساء درسنا معاً، ونحن الآن متعبان قليلاً.

What it says: Yesterday I went to the market with my brother. I bought bread and fruit, then we drank coffee in a small café. He told me, 'I will travel tomorrow to Beirut.' I asked, 'Why?' and he answered, 'Because my work is there.' In the evening we studied together; we are a little tired now.

Listening — one voice, one text

Use the speaker button to hear this text with a browser voice tagged ar-SA; playback starts only after a click. If no matching voice is installed, read it aloud yourself — the rhythm is the point.

أ: بكم هذا الكتاب؟
ب: عشرون جنيهاً.
أ: غالي قليلاً. وهذه الحقيبة؟
ب: خمسة وثلاثون. كل شيء عندنا بخمسة وثلاثين وأربعين.
أ: حسناً، آخذ الاثنين.

What it says: A: How much is this book? B: Twenty pounds. A: A little expensive. And this bag? B: Thirty-five. Everything we have is thirty-five or forty. A: Fine, I'll take both.

10 idioms and fixed phrases

IdiomWord for wordWhat it means
على الرحب والسعةwith welcome and roomyou are very welcome
في لمح البصرin the blink of an eyeinstantly
يداً بيدhand with handtogether, side by side
على قدم وساقon foot and legin full swing, at full speed
قلباً وقالباًheart and mouldwholeheartedly
كلمة السرthe word of the secretthe watchword; the key to something
على أحسن وجهin the best mannerperfectly, impeccably
من دون مقدماتwithout introductionsgetting straight to the point
على طول الخطalong the whole lineall the way, consistently
بين عشية وضحاهاbetween dusk and its forenoonovernight, in a single day

The 3 mistakes this level makes

 • أنا ذهبت أمس إلى السوق. → ذهبتُ أمس إلى السوق. The perfect ending -تُ already means 'I'; keeping أنا is not wrong but sounds heavy in a plain past narrative.
 • سأذهب أمس. → ذهبتُ أمس. سـ marks the future only; it cannot sit with أمس.
 • هذا الكتاب كبير والكتاب هذا كبير أيضاً. → هذا الكتاب كبير وهذا الكتاب كبير أيضاً. Two full noun phrases need a joining و and one demonstrative each; repeating the whole phrase without a connector is a run-on.

Your task

Yesterday and tomorrow, in writing Write five Arabic sentences: three about yesterday with perfect-tense endings, two about tomorrow with سـ or سوف. Then say them aloud without reading, and circle any sentence where you used أنا with a past verb — that is the habit this lesson breaks.

After A2: the A2+ checkpoint

A2+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between Arabic A2 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at A2+ when you can keep a conversation going, tell a short story. Get there by working the recall drills above and the review deck until nothing on this page surprises you, then open the B1 pages.
