Arabic B1 — Intermediate: كان, dual, commands, opinions

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Arabic B1 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. B1 is one of the six CEFR levels and the B1 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is a young adult, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can explain a problem, write a message, follow a podcast.
A young adult learning Arabic at level B1 (youth)

 • Command politely and negate every tense
 • Argue opinions and talk weather and plans

The dual in real life: pairs

Arabic has a third number. Two of anything takes one ending: -ان when it is the subject, -ين when anything acts on it. Pronouns follow: هما for 'they two' and both verbs agree.

WordSay itMeaning
كتابانkitābāntwo books
والدانwālidāntwo parents
ساعتانsāʿatāntwo hours (o'clock)
هماhumāthey two
صديقانṣadīqāntwo friends
Dual endings

جاء الطالبان (both students came). رأيتُ الطالبَين (I saw both students). The dual also eats the plural: أخوان, not ثلاثة أخوين when there are exactly two.

-ān (nominative) · -ayn (accusative and genitive)
WordSay itMeaning
هما طالبان مجتهدان.humā ṭālibān mujtahidān.They are two diligent students.
انتظرتُ ساعتين.intaẓartu sāʿatayn.I waited two hours.
الوالدان في البيت.al-wālidān fī al-bayt.The parents are at home.
Watch out:
 • عندي أخوان اثنان. → عندي أخوان. The dual already means two; اثنان is redundant.
 • رأيتُ الطالبان. → رأيتُ الطالبَين. After a verb, the dual takes -ين.

Dialogue. Read it aloud twice — once for each speaker.

Requests that stay polite, prohibitions that are not rude

The imperative alone can sound like an order. Arabic softens it with لو سمحت or من فضلك, and forbids with لا + the jussive — a form that says 'don't', not 'you must not'.

WordSay itMeaning
لو سمحتlaw samaḥtif you would be so kind
تكرّمtakramplease do (kindly)
لا تنسَlā tansadon't forget
يمكنyumkinit is possible; may
بكل سرورbi-kull surūrwith great pleasure
Softening the imperative

أرسل لي الملف، لو سمحت. To forbid, Arabic says لا ترسل (don't send) — lighter than a rule. لا تنسَ أنّ الموعد غداً: don't forget that the appointment is tomorrow.

imperative + min faḍlik / law samaḥt · lā + jussive
WordSay itMeaning
أعطني الرقم، لو سمحت.aʿṭinī al-raqm, law samaḥt.Give me the number, if you would.
لا تتأخر غداً.lā tataʾakhkhar ghadan.Don't be late tomorrow.
يمكن أن نلتقي بعد العمل، بكل سرور.yumkin an naltqī baʿda al-ʿamal, bi-kull surūr.We can meet after work, with pleasure.
Watch out:
 • لا تتأخرُ غداً. → لا تتأخرْ غداً. After لا the verb is jussive: no final damma.
 • أعطني الرقم شكراً. → أعطني الرقم، لو سمحت. شكراً thanks; it does not soften a request.

Dialogue. Read it aloud twice — once for each speaker.

Recall drills — 126 more questions from the B1 words

These 126 drills are generated from the Arabic B1 vocabulary list — the words of “Past stories and dual” through “Opinions and weather”, in both directions: recognition (word → meaning) and production (meaning → word). They re-ask what the course data already contains; no answer here was written by a machine, and a generated drill is practice, never a lesson.

Arabic B1 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Arabic B1 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

كان is not simply 'was'. It turns the sentence it opens into a scene: كان الجوّ حاراً sets the weather as a backdrop, and a following clause reports what happened against it. Arabic storytelling leans on this 'scene then event' order far more than English does, which is why a learner who translates clause-by-clause produces correct sentences that still do not sound like a story.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

كان الوقت متأخراً حين وصلنا إلى المحطة، وكانت السماء تمطر. لم نجد سيارة أجرة، فمشينا على القدمين حتى الفندق. قال أخي: «لو وصلنا مبكراً، لوجدنا غرفة أفضل». ضحكتُ وقلت: «المهم أنّنا وصلنا بسلام». في الصباح كانت المدينة هادئة، وقد فتحت المقاهي أبوابها.

What it says: It was late when we reached the station, and the sky was raining. We did not find a taxi, so we walked on foot as far as the hotel. My brother said, 'If we had arrived early, we would have found a better room.' I laughed and said, 'What matters is that we arrived safely.' In the morning the city was quiet, and the cafés had opened their doors.

Listening — one voice, one text

Use the speaker button to hear this text with a browser voice tagged ar-SA; playback starts only after a click. If no matching voice is installed, read it aloud yourself — the rhythm is the point.

أ: لماذا تأخرت؟
ب: لم أستطع، كان الطريق مزدحماً.
أ: وهل اتصلت؟
ب: حاولت مرتين، لكنّ الشبكة كانت ضعيفة. أعتذر بصدق.

What it says: A: Why were you late? B: I couldn't — the road was crowded. A: And did you call? B: I tried twice, but the network was weak. I sincerely apologise.

The 3 mistakes this level makes

 • لم أذهب إلى المدرسة أمس. → لم أذهبْ إلى المدرسة أمس. لم is followed by the jussive; أذهب stays written without the final damma, and the written form must show it.
 • كان الطلاب مجتهد. → كان الطلاب مجتهدين. The predicate agrees with a plural subject: مجتهدون / مجتهدين.
 • إذا ذهبتُ أمس لرأيتُ. → لو ذهبتُ أمس لرأيتُ. إذا is for real future conditions; an unreal or past condition takes لو.

Your task

A storyboard in Arabic Take one real journey you made. Write six Arabic sentences in the order scene-then-event: two with كان setting the scene, two with لم or لن, two with a connector (لكنّ، لأنّ، فـ). Then tell it aloud in ninety seconds without notes.

After B1: the B1+ checkpoint

B1+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between Arabic B1 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at B1+ when you can work in the language, argue a point politely. Get there by working the recall drills above and the review deck until nothing on this page surprises you, then open the B2 pages.
