Korean A2 — Elementary: past, desires, places, food

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Korean A2 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. A2 is one of the six CEFR levels and the A2 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is a teenager, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can talk about your day, shop, order food.
A teenager learning Korean at level A2 (teen)
A2 — on the ladder this level is a teenager, age 13: by the end of it the learner can talk about your day, shop, order food. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when A2 is finished

  • Talk about past with 었어요/였어요
  • Express wants with -고 싶어요
  • Move around, eat out and shop

시장에서 값을 깎아요

At a market a price is a conversation. 싸게 해 주세요 asks for a lower price, -면 makes it conditional on quantity, and the reply usually names a number and stops.

Asking for a price

The conditional -면 turns quantity into a bargain: 두 개 사면 얼마예요? asks what two would cost. The request 싸게 해 주세요 works on the price with 하다 — 만들다 would mean making an object, not lowering a number.

얼마예요? · 두 개 사면 얼마예요? · 좀 싸게 해 주세요

좀 싸게 해 주세요.jom ssage hae juseyo.Make it a little cheaper, please.
Watch out:
  • 좀 싸게 만들어 주세요. → 좀 싸게 해 주세요. A price is lowered with 하다; 만들다 makes a thing.
  • 너무 비싸요 깎아 주세요. → 너무 비싸니까 깎아 주세요. -니까 links the reason to the request in one sentence.

Dialogue. Read it aloud twice — once for each speaker.

Recall drills — 126 more questions from the A2 words

These 126 drills are generated from the Korean A2 vocabulary list — the words of “Past and desires” through “Food and shopping”, in both directions: recognition (word → meaning) and production (meaning → word). They re-ask what the course data already contains; no answer here was written by a machine, and a generated drill is practice, never a lesson.

Korean A2 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Korean A2 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

A Korean meal arrives all at once. 반찬, the small side dishes, are refilled without asking at most restaurants, and the rice and soup are yours alone. Because 반찬 and 물 are shared, the polite habit is to fill a neighbour's glass before your own and to leave the last piece alone until somebody offers it. 수저 come in a rolled set, and using the spoon for rice and the chopsticks for 반찬 is the quiet default.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

지난 주말에 미나 씨와 부산에 갔어요. 아침 일찍 기차를 타고 바다를 봤어요. 점심에는 회를 먹었는데 아주 신선했어요. 오후에는 시장에 갔습니다. 과일이 비쌌지만 커피는 싸게 샀어요. 저녁에 비가 와서 우산을 하나 사야 했어요. 그래도 좋은 여행이었습니다. 다음에는 사진을 더 많이 찍고 싶어요.

What it says: Last weekend I went to Busan with Mina. We took an early train and saw the sea. For lunch we ate raw fish, and it was very fresh. In the afternoon we went to the market. The fruit was expensive, but we bought coffee cheaply. In the evening it rained, so we had to buy an umbrella. It was a good trip anyway. Next time I want to take more photographs.

The 3 mistakes this level makes

  • 어제 밥을 먹어요. → 어제 밥을 먹었어요. 어제 is past, so the verb carries -았/었-; the present form belongs to 오늘.
  • 물을 마시고 싶어요 있어요. → 물을 마시고 싶어요. 싶어요 ends the sentence — a second verb cannot follow it.
  • 집에 가요 싶어요. → 집에 가고 싶어요. A wish is made on the stem with -고 싶어요, never on the finished form 가요.

Your task

Tell the story of one day out Write six to eight sentences about a real or imagined outing, using at least four past-tense verbs, one -고 싶어요 wish and one price. Then rewrite two of the past sentences in the polite 합니다 form.
