Korean B1 — Intermediate: long negation, ability, honorifics, opinions

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Korean B1 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. B1 is one of the six CEFR levels and the B1 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is a young adult, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can explain a problem, write a message, follow a podcast.
A young adult learning Korean at level B1 (youth)
B1 — on the ladder this level is a young adult, age 20: by the end of it the learner can explain a problem, write a message, follow a podcast. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when B1 is finished

  • Negate formally and express ability
  • Talk family with honorifics
  • Argue opinions and describe weather

약속을 지키지 못했을 때

Missing an appointment needs one sentence, not two: -지 못해서 carries the failure into the apology. To ask for a new time, use -(으)ㄹ 수 있을까요? with a reason attached.

WordSay itMeaning
사정sajeongcircumstances, a situation
늦다neutdato be late
지키다jikidato keep (a promise)
미루다mirudato postpone
-(으)ㄹ 수 있을까요?-(eu)l su isseulkkayo?could you / would it be possible to
Apology and repair

-지 못하다 is cannot, -지 않다 is do not; an apology explains the failure with 못해서, not with 않아서. The request for a new time is softened by -(으)ㄹ까요?, and the reason precedes it.

약속을 지키지 못해서 죄송합니다 · 사정이 생겼습니다 · 시간을 바꿀 수 있을까요?

Watch out:
  • 약속을 지키지 않았습니다 미안합니다. → 약속을 지키지 못해서 미안합니다. -지 못해서 joins the failure to the apology in one sentence.
  • 시간을 바꿀 수 있어요입니까? → 시간을 바꿀 수 있습니까? 해요체 and 합니다체 endings are not combined in one verb.

축하할 일과 위로할 일

Events come with their own verbs: 축하하다 for congratulations, 위로하다 for comfort, and 드리다 for the gift or the greeting you give a superior. A parent in a sentence takes 께서 and -(으)시- even when nothing polite is being said to them.

WordSay itMeaning
결혼식gyeolhonsikwedding ceremony
축의금chuk-uigeumcongratulatory money
돌잔치doljanchifirst-birthday party
드리다deuridato give (humble)
위로하다wirohadato comfort
Congratulations and condolences

축하하다 takes the event as its object, so it is 결혼을 축하합니다, not 결혼식을 축하합니다. When you give something to an elder the verb is the humble 드리다, and when an elder does something to you the verb carries -(으)시-.

결혼을 축하합니다 · 축의금을 드렸어요 · 어머니께서 가셨어요
WordSay itMeaning

  • 어머니가 결혼식에 갔어요. → 어머니께서 결혼식에 가셨어요. An elder takes 께서 and -시- even in plain narration.

Korean B1 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Korean B1 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

Korean has six speech levels, and the two that matter first are 해요체 (-아요/어요) and 합니다체 (-습니다/입니다). Neither is more polite than the other in the abstract: 해요체 is warm and standard in conversation, 합니다체 is the register of announcements, news and first meetings. Age and workplace rank decide which one, and -(으)시- marks the person you are talking about rather than the person you are talking to.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

우리 회사는 작지만 일이 많습니다. 저는 매일 아침 회의 자료를 만들고 오후에는 고객과 통화합니다. 요즘 새로운 일을 배우느라 바쁘지만 재미있습니다. 지난주에는 팀장님께 제 의견을 말씀드렸습니다. 처음에는 긴장했지만 자료를 준비한 덕분에 잘 설명했습니다. 팀장님은 좋은 생각이라고 하셨습니다. 다음 달에는 제가 발표를 맡을 것입니다.

What it says: Our company is small, but there is a lot of work. Every morning I prepare the material for the meeting and in the afternoon I talk with customers. These days I am busy learning something new, but it is interesting. Last week I gave my team leader my opinion. At first I was nervous, but thanks to the preparation I explained it well. The team leader said it was a good idea. Next month I will give the presentation.

What it says: Mina: Team leader, do you have a moment? Leader: Yes, what is it? Mina: I intend to send this week's report by Friday. Leader: Good. Add one more set of figures, though. Mina: Understood. I will correct it and send it today.

The 3 mistakes this level makes

  • 저는 매운 음식을 먹지 않아요 못 해요. → 저는 매운 음식을 먹지 못해요. Choose one negation: -지 않다 means do not, -지 못하다 means cannot.
  • 할아버지가 밥을 먹었어요. → 할아버지께서 밥을 드셨어요. An elder takes 께서 and the honorific verb 드시다, and the verb carries -시-.
  • 몇 살이에요? 저는 스물 살이에요. → 몇 살이에요? 저는 스무 살이에요. 스물 shortens to 스무 before the counter 살.

Your task

After B1: the B1+ checkpoint

B1+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between Korean B1 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at B1+ when you can work in the language, argue a point politely. Get there by working the recall drills above and the review deck until nothing on this page surprises you, then open the B2 pages.
