Korean B2 — Advanced: conditionals, honorifics, debate, culture

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Korean B2 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. B2 is one of the six CEFR levels and the B2 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is an adult, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can read a newspaper, write a real letter, joke.
An adult learning Korean at level B2 (adult)
B2 — on the ladder this level is an adult, age 34: by the end of it the learner can read a newspaper, write a real letter, joke. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when B2 is finished

 • Use -(으)면 and -(으)ㅂ시다 naturally
 • Honor elders with full -시- speech
 • Discuss Korean culture with real fluency

계획이 바뀔 때

A plan that did not happen is told with -(으)려고 했어요, and what replaced it is named with 대신에. When nothing could have been done the phrase is 어쩔 수 없이, which takes the whole sentence and never a second verb.

WordSay itMeaning
계획gyehoekplan
바뀌다bakkwidato change, to be changed
대신에daesin-einstead of
어쩔 수 없이eojjeol su eopsihaving no choice
-(으)려고 했어요-(eu)ryeogo haesseoyoI was going to
Intentions that changed

-(으)려고 했어요 states what you intended before the change, and the outcome needs its own predicate: 비가 와서 못 갔어요. 대신에 then names the replacement inside one clause — 영화 대신에 커피, not two 대신에 in a row.

가려고 했어요 · 비가 와서 못 갔어요 · 그 대신에 집에서 일했어요
WordSay itMeaning
주말에 등산을 가려고 했어요.jumal-e deungsan-eul garyeogo haesseoyo.I was going to go hiking at the weekend.
비가 와서 못 갔어요.bi-ga waseo mot gasseoyo. It rained, so I could not go.
등산 대신에 집에서 영화를 봤어요.deungsan daesin-e jib-eseo yeonghwa-reul bwasseoyo.Instead of hiking I watched a film at home.
Watch out:
 • 계획을 바꾸려고 했어요 바꿨어요. → 계획을 바꾸려고 했어요. -(으)려고 했어요 already carries the intention; the action is not added after it.
 • 대신에 영화를 봤어요 대신에 커피를 마셨어요. → 영화 대신에 커피를 마셨어요. 대신에 replaces one noun with another inside a single clause.

Dialogue. Read it aloud twice — once for each speaker.

Korean B2 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Korean B2 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

정 is the Korean word for the bond that accumulates between people who have shared time, food and difficulty. It cannot be bought or hurried, and the language treats it as something you 감정을 쌓다, pile up. It explains a great deal of Korean professional life: a team will eat together after work, and a favour refused outright is rarer than a favour accepted slowly. In a debate, the same 정 means disagreement is usually wrapped in a frame that keeps the relationship intact.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

What it says: In a debate, understanding the other side's argument exactly matters more than winning. When they offer evidence, acknowledge it first and only then point out its limits. Emotional phrasing, however, weakens persuasion. For example, if we can trust this data we can also accept the conclusion. If the evidence is weak, on the other hand, the right move is to hold the conclusion back. A good debate is not winning and losing but a process of arriving at a better decision together.

Listening — one voice, one text

Use the speaker button to hear this text with a browser voice tagged ko-KR; playback starts only after a click. If no matching voice is installed, read it aloud yourself — the rhythm is the point.

동료: 이번 결정은 너무 빠르지 않았습니까?
분석자: 속도는 문제가 아닙니다. 근거가 약한 것이 문제입니다.
동료: 그럼 결정을 취소해야 한다고 보십니까?
분석자: 아니요, 조건을 붙여서 유지하는 편이 낫습니다.
동료: 예를 들어 어떤 조건입니까?

What it says: Colleague: Was this decision not too fast? Analyst: Speed is not the problem. Weak evidence is the problem. Colleague: Then do you think the decision should be cancelled? Analyst: No — it is better to keep it with conditions attached. Colleague: For example, what conditions?

The 3 mistakes this level makes

 • 선생님, 어제 뵙었어요. → 선생님, 어제 뵈었어요. 뵙다 inserts ㅂ only before a vowel ending: 뵈었어요, but 뵙겠습니다.
 • 이 문제는 저에 의해 해결되었습니다. → 이 문제는 제가 해결했습니다. Korean prefers the active voice for your own actions; -에 의해 is translationese.
 • 그 일은 제가 하겠습니다. 그래서 팀장님과 상의하지 않았습니다. → 그 일은 제가 하겠지만, 팀장님과 상의해야 합니다. 하겠지만 balances the promise against the requirement in one sentence.

Your task

Take two sides of one question Choose a question you actually disagree with somebody about. Write the strongest version of the other side in three sentences, then your own in three, linking them with -지만, 반면에 and 따라서. Finish with the condition under which you would change your position.

After B2: the B2+ checkpoint

B2+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between Korean B2 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at B2+ when you can run a meeting, read a contract, disagree well. Get there by working the recall drills above and the review deck until nothing on this page surprises you.
