ਰੋਜ਼ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ

Punjabi A1 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Punjabi A1 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

Punjabi is written in Gurmukhi, and it is a tonal language: the same letters with a different pitch are different words, which is why ਘੋੜਾ (a horse) and ਕੋਰਾ (blank) are not the same word said two ways. Two letters carry sounds English does not use, and the ੜ of ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ (to read) is the one every learner hears first. Shahmukhi, the Perso-Arabic script, writes the same language across the border.

The 3 mistakes this level makes

• ਤੂੰ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ? → ਤੂੰ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈਂ? The intimate ਤੂੰ takes ਹੈਂ; ਹੈ belongs to ਉਹ and ਇਹ.
• ਮੈਂ ਨੂੰ ਚਾਹ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ। → ਮੈਨੂੰ ਚਾਹ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ। The dative is one word: ਮੈਨੂੰ, not ਮੈਂ ਨੂੰ.
• ਇਹ ਮੇਰਾ ਭੈਣ ਹੈ। → ਇਹ ਮੇਰੀ ਭੈਣ ਹੈ। ਭੈਣ is feminine, so the possessive agrees: ਮੇਰੀ ਭੈਣ.
