Your first language decides which parts of Hindi are easy and which are slow, and almost no course takes account of it. This page does. It is written for someone who already speaks Ukrainian and wants to know what that is worth before spending a year finding out.

Where the verb goes

Ukrainian word order is free because case endings carry the roles, and Hindi works the same way with postpositions. Ukrainian speakers adapt to Hindi word order quickly.

What Ukrainian gives you for free

Seven cases, which make Hindi's postpositions immediately intuitive — the instinct that a noun's role is marked rather than positional is already yours. Verbal aspect prepares you for Hindi's completed versus continuous forms. Grammatical gender you handle without thinking, and Ukrainian's past tense agrees with gender, which is the closest European analogue to Hindi's verb agreement. And having learned Cyrillic as a child makes Devanagari a familiar kind of task rather than an intimidating one. A large number of Indian students have studied in Ukrainian cities, so real everyday contact between the languages exists.

What it does not prepare you for

Aspiration, absent from Ukrainian. Retroflex consonants are new, though Ukrainian ш and ж help slightly. And Ukrainian palatalisation should be dropped — softening consonants before front vowels has no Hindi counterpart.

A realistic first thirty days

Days 1–6: aspiration and dropping palatalisation.
Days 7–13: Devanagari. Faster than you expect, having already learned a second alphabet.
Days 14–22: postpositions as cases — the fastest route for you.
Days 23–30: verb agreement, half-prepared by your past tense.

Notice that the order is not the order a general course would use. That is the whole point of organising this by your first language: the sequence that works depends on what you already have.

A note on the Hindi spellings

Devanagari is easy to get slightly wrong when it is typed by hand — a missing matra, the wrong nukta. If something here looks off to you, trust a native speaker over this page and please tell us so it gets fixed — it takes a moment and a real person reads it. Romanised spellings are a guide to the sound, not a standard: there is no single official way to write Hindi in Latin letters.

The part you cannot do alone
