Tunisian learners typically bring Arabic and French together, which is a better pair for Hindi than either alone. Arabic gives you the shared vocabulary that Persian left in Hindi and Urdu — kitab, waqt, khabar, dunya, mushkil — so several hundred words are already familiar. French gives you nasal vowels, which map directly onto Hindi's anusvara, and a lifetime of grammatical gender, so the idea that a table has a gender needs no argument. Indian film has had a Tunisian audience for decades, which is how most learners here first hear the language. The p sound is the standing warning: Arabic has none, and Hindi contrasts it with b.

Devanagari is easy to get slightly wrong when it is typed by hand — a missing matra, the wrong nukta.
